Style Mavens & Mavericks: Elle Macpherson

Models aren’t always thought of as the smartest bunch. I’ve never quite figured out what this assumption is based on - I suspect we mere mortals are just jealous of their impressive physical attributes and glamorous lifestyles! But even if we shift our thinking and consider just how clever these beauties are, few models have had the long-term success and superior business nous of our very own Elle “The Body” Macpherson.

I’ve recently felt a renewed affection for Elle after becoming somewhat addicted to the TV series, Fashion Star, of which she’s the host and executive producer. Despite high profile mentors such as Nicole Richie and John Varvatos sharing the screen, Elle steals the show every week.

Elle first achieved international fame back in the 1980s, making the covers of magazines like Time, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. A true supermodel, she traversed television commercials, high fashion shoots and also became infamous for gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit edition a record five times.

In the 1990s, she broke the model mould and began developing some serious business ventures. When Bendon lingerie approached Elle to promote their label, she took the opportunity to do something unheard of at the time. She negotiated a licensing arrangement whereby the products would have her name on the label and she would be involved in the design. Elle Macpherson Intimates was born, and continues to be a highly successful international brand.

Oh, and did I mention she can also act? She’s been in Woody Allen films and over the years has starred beside the likes of George Clooney, Anthony Hopkins and Barbara Streisand. She’s hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live, and, of course, played Joey’s roommate on Friends. Speaking of television, Elle has become a producer and host to be reckoned with, stealing the show on Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model, and of course, Fashion Star.

Time is usually the enemy when it comes to modelling careers, but Elle shows no signs of slowing down. How many models can boast a career that’s in its fourth decade and still going strong?

Working as a freelance fashion curator, she is an avid wearer of vintage (just ask for her best spots about town), collects old paintings and postcards and can always find the beauty in a little clutter.
