Hollywood do us a great service all year round. They pump out movies to keep us entertained, and in doing so they make sure that we actually leave the house on the odd occasion.
We've put together a list of films you need to see right now, so put on your best pair of trackies, and prepare to sit in a dark room with a bunch of complete strangers for two hours.
Ghostbusters
30 years after the original, Ghostbusters has been remade with an all female lead cast! With Melissa McCarthy (Gilmore Girls) and Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) leading the charge, and a hilarious performance by Chris Hemsworth, you’re basically guaranteed to laugh your way through this one.
Star Trek Beyond
The newest release from the Star Trek series sees the USS Enterprise veer into uncharted territory on the first leg of their five-year mission. Kirk and his crew end up stranded on a foreign planet and must figure out a way to make it back to Earth.
The Legend Of Tarzan
Do we need to say anything more than ‘shirtless Alexander Skarsgård’? The film follows Tarzan and Jane (Margot Robbie—general Aussie babe of Wolf of Wall Street fame) back to Africa after living in London. Chaos ensues when Tarzan and Jane are captured, leading to mass jungle drama. One to catch if CGI animals and bulk eye candy are your jam.
Lights Out
This thriller, starring Aussie Theresa Palmer, follows the story of Rebecca who, when growing up, would experience unexplained and terrifying incidents when the lights were out (didn’t we all?). Now that her brother is experiencing the same thing, Rebecca is back home to uncover the truth. Dun dun duuuun.
Finding Dory
More than 10 years after Finding Nemo, the sequel is finally out. Cue the squeals of immature adults everywhere. Follow the loveable but forgetful Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) as she attempts to find her parents and save them from captivity.
Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates
If you just want a laugh and to eat a tonne of popcorn, this is the movie for you. Zac Efron (Bad Neighbours) and Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect) star as Mike and Dave. After placing an online ad for wedding dates, they land up with Alice (Pitch Perfect’s Anne Kendrick’) and Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza), who are definitely not the cookie cutter perfect wedding dates they were after. Zac Efron’s general physical appearance alone makes this movie worth watching.
Me Before You
Based on the novel by Jojo Moyes, this story centres around Louisa Clark (Emilia Clark AKA Daenerys Targaryan from Game of Thrones). After losing her job at the local café, Louisa begins working for the Traynors, looking after their recently paralysed son, Will (Sam Clafin- The Hunger Games). PSA: bring tissues for this one.
Love And Friendship
Set in the 1790s, Love and Friendship is the latest film from cult Director, Whit Stillman. Hilarity ensues as the newly widowed Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) takes up residence at her in-law's estate and tries to match-make her reluctant daughter, and naturally, herself as well.
The BFG
Based on the much-loved Roald Dahl novel, Steven Spielberg and CGI have finally brought this classic to life. In case you haven’t read the book (are you from Mars?), the film centres around 10-year-old Sophie who forms an unlikely friendship with a 24-foot giant.
Jason Bourne
The latest instalment from the Bourne series sees Matt Damon reprising his role as Jason Bourne. Follow Bourne on a mission to uncover the truth about his past.
Swiss Army Man
Hank (Paul Dano) is stranded on a desert island and has given up hope of ever making it home. This all changes when Manny, a flatulent corpse played by Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) washes up on shore.
Suicide Squad
Possibly one of the most talked about movies of late, an all-star cast (Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Viola Davis, Common, Ben Affleck, Will Smith, Cara Delevigne) are the Suicide Squad; A group of super villains who carry out black ops in exchange for clemency. Jared Leto gives a seriously creepy performance.
Bad Moms
Three overworked and underappreciated moms at their breaking point join forces to indulge in a little un-mom like behaviour to have fun. When a movie is led by Mila Kunis (Friends with Benefits), Kathryn Hahn (Parks and Recreation), Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) and Christina Applegate (Anchorman), you know that there will be plenty of laughs.
The Shallows
Although she might be best known as Serena Van der Woodsen from Gossip Girl, Blake Lively has gone gritty as she literally throws herself in the deep end with this shark drama. After finding herself in the crosshairs of a Great White, Nancy (Lively) has to do everything she can to survive.
