New netflix documentaries

Remember back when the flicks were the coolest ticket in town? All the big entertainment budgets were spent on movies and we lined up to see big budget blockbusters like Jurassic Park and Avatar. Then in the blink of an eye, all the best writers and budgets were directed to TV and we saw the rise of epic TV shows like Breaking Bad, Sex and The City, and House of Cards.

But now, in a move that no-one could have predicted, the once ‘boring’ genre of documentaries has been given a makeover and become THE talk of the town. With awesome directors finding a whole host of compelling stories from pint-sized golfers whose game rivals Tiger Woods to the nightmare of a man framed for murder, here are 7 Netflix documentaries that have to be seen to be believed. Binge watch alert.

The Short Game

If you’ve been trying to perfect your golf swing for a while now, you need to take a look at The Short Game, a doco about freakishly awesome 7 and 8-year-old golfers who could give Tiger a run for his money. Produced by Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, The Short Game follows these mini golf prodigies as they prep for the US Kids Gold World Championship and show us how it’s really done.

Making A Murderer

Considered to be as good as the cult hit podcast Serial, the 10-part Netflix doco series Making A Murderer has tongues wagging all over the world as people ask: was Stephen Avery actually framed for a murder he didn’t commit?

Cowspiracy

If you’re not vegetarian already, you will be once you finish watching Cowspiracy, a horrifying look behind what really goes on in the process of getting steak onto our plates. Ignorance ain’t bliss. Srsly.

Zeitgeist

Do you think man walking on the moon was a sham? Elvis ain’t really dead? Then Zeitgeist is the doco for you. Presenting conspiracy theories such as Is Christianity a myth? to Was 9/11 an inside job? You’ll never trust a politician (or anyone else really) again.

Twinsters

Imagine if you watched a Youtube clip and saw the spitting image of yourself talking back at you. Well, that’s what happened to Anais and Samantha in the documentary Twinsters where two identical twin sisters who were separated at birth accidentally find each other. Pop!* (*This will make sense when you watch it).

Somm

Only 170 people have ever passed the Master Sommelier test in the past 40 years. If you fancy yourself a wine lover, get involved with Somm which follows four wine aficionados who hit the books and hit them hard in the hopes of joining the world’s leading wine experts.

Hot Girls Wanted

Hot Girls Wanted shines a light on the amateur porn industry in America and the young girls who travel to Miami thinking that they’ll be living a Playboy Bunny-esque life making mega dollars. It becomes heart breaking as the girls realise the creepy, depressing reality they’re really in, especially in comparison to their previous lives as small town cheerleaders and high school students.
