In big news, Disney+ has just gone and done what no other streaming juggernaut has done before and spoiler alert—we’re big fans already.
Having only officially launched in November of last year, Disney+ is a serious goldmine of the entire Disney catalogue which means all the good stuff you used to watch as a kid from the likes of Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and even 20th Century. But while the fact that Disney+ keeps a deep vault of nostalgic films, this also means, at times, these films contain extremely outdated views and negative depictions and even mistreatment of certain people and cultures.
Instead of removing this content, Disney+ is pretty damn keen to use these old films to spark conversation on the history that has inevitably affected us all, which now means you’ll find the following advisory before several classic titles:
“This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.
Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”
The age-old classic of Peter Pan is just one of the movies which now features the content warning. Disney+ states that “the film portrays Native people in a stereotypical manner that reflects neither the diversity of Native peoples nor their authentic cultural traditions. It shows them speaking in an unintelligible language and repeatedly refers to them as "redskins," an offensive term”.
You’ll also find the new content warning before films such as Aristocats, Dumbo and (no surprise) Swiss Family Robinson and to be honest, it’s about damn time.
And here are the best movies to stream on Disney+ right now.
