With us all making fewer trips to the supermarket, we need to be mindful of how long our fresh produce will last, and how long it's safe to eat.
Eggs are something we usually buy in bulk, but how long do eggs last?
How long your eggs last absolutely depends on how you keep them, so we'll get into the differences.
How Long Do Eggs Last In The Fridge?
According to Australian Eggs "Avoiding temperature fluctuation is critical to egg safety. A cold egg left out at room temperature can sweat, facilitating the growth of bacteria that could contaminate the egg. Refrigerated eggs should not be left out for more than two hours."
Eggs should be stored in the fridge in their original carton which reduces water loss, and prevents flavours and scents from other stored foods from penetrating the eggs.
Refrigerated eggs shouldn't be left out for more than two hours.
Raw whole eggs will last up to six weeks in the fridge.
How Long Do Eggs Last At Room Temperature?
Keeping eggs outside of the fridge at room temperature can be risky, but it all depends on where you live.
If the eggs are kept in an environment that is below 15°C then there shouldn't be an issue with how long the eggs last. If the temperature fluctuates a lot, and if you live in an area with high temperature then you're likely to create an environment where bacteria can grow inside the egg and harm you later when you consume them.
How eggs are kept is different around the world. In the U.S.A eggs are kept in the fridge due to farming practices which find eggs produced at a larger scale in a smaller environment. In the UK and Europe, you're more likely to find free-range egg farms, these eggs have a lower risk of salmonella growth and are usually kept outside of the fridge.
Eggs kept out of the fridge in a pantry or on the kitchen bench shouldn't be kept there for any longer than a week.
Can I Freeze Eggs?
Yes. You can freeze eggs. But not within the shell. Wild news to everyone we're sure.
You should only freeze fresh eggs. Place them in a container, and make sure you label how many egg whites, and/or egg yolks are in the container with the date labelled.
You can keep raw egg whites and yolks in the freezer for up to a year.
