The fact of the matter is, we all wish we were the next Addison Rae Easterling or an upcoming Josh Richards.

TikTok is a juggernaut short-video app which is an all-consumer of people’s attention and we bet if you’ve done the deed and downloaded the app (like 800 million others) you’ve probably gone down the thought process of watching a dance challenge or two, uploading a video or two and then thinking, “cool—so like, how do I monetise my TikTok now?”.

And we hear you loud and clear. That’s the big question, isn't it? Can you actually make money off TikTok? The answer—you absolutely can. However, it’s dependent on a number of factors and not as simple as hauling in a big audience, posting a funny video and seeing some big cash-money flow into your bank account. The big takeaway is that although TikTok videos can’t necessarily be monetised in the same way as, say, as YouTube videos can, it’s still possible to make money, you’ll just have to be a bit creative.

Here’s how to actually make money off TikTok.

Go Live

So, you’ve downloaded TikTok and you’re keen to go hard on a real-life TikTok monetisation strategy—we stan you. You’ve got your highlighters, your colourful sticky-notes and you’re ready to make some cash and be the Creator you’re at least 50 per cent sure you were born to be. Well, grab a pen and manifest yourself to some 1000 or so followers. TikTok basically lets you live stream as soon as you’ve hit this follower milestone and once you can go live my friend, your followers and even non-followers can tune-in and shoot over “virtual gifts”. These commonly look like “panda”, “Italian hand” and “love bang” icons but the good news is that you can actually get these cashed out at a later date.

Sell Your Account

If you’ve poured some serious blood, sweat and tears into your TikTok account (with more WAP-ing than you’d like to admit) and it’s looking nice and juicy on the follower side of things—sell your account. You’re going to want to go pretty niche (Brown Cardigan-style) and create some hilarious and engaging content to grow your audience. Once it’s big enough, you can reach out to brands and see if there’s any interest in your TikTok profile to make some bank.

Become A TikTok Manager

One really popular way to earn via TikTok is to actually help Creators (in case you missed it, Influencers live on Instagram and Creators live on TikTok) manage their TikTok accounts. Those that have millions of followers are looking for some media-savvy legends to help out with their content strat, liaise with brands and even help out with production. This one can be a pretty sweet side gig if you’re keen to make some extra cash.

Forge Your Way To TikTok Creator Status

Much like Instagram has influencers, TikTok has Creators. If this hustle is something that entices you—go for gold. There is a myriad of ways to build your following and your brand so you can eventually tip your hat off to recommending products you might genuinely love. Once you have, TikTok is all about letting you reap those cash rewards from brands that want to show you some love.
