There’s no denying it, Netflix’s Tiger King has been the success story of Coronavirus, with every single person on your ‘gram posting a meme about it. But because we know you’ve already smashed it (and low-key done some investigating into the death of Carole Baskin’s husband), it’s time for your next obsession and we have found a beauty to fill that binge-shaped hole in your heart.
Come through, Netflix’s Unorthodox, a four-part series that is rocking a 95% ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Based on the New York Times bestselling memoir of the same name by Deborah Feldman, Unorthodox tells the story of 19-year-old ultra-Orthodox Jewish woman Esther Shapiro (Shira Haas). Raised in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Esther rejects her radicalized upbringing and escapes to Germany, leaving behind her arranged marriage to start a new life.
With little more than her passport and minimal funds, Esther tries to build a new life in Berlin making new friends and essentially building a new identity, free from the constraints of her family… but of course, it’s not that simple.
Part coming-of-age story and part thriller, you’ll devour this show as you watch Esther follow the dark trails to uncover the dangerous mysteries of her family’s past and attempt to break free from them for good.
