There is an epic line-up of must-see movies coming to the big screens this May and nothing screams movie night like colder weather. There is a range of genres showing in the new releases, from rom-coms to war films and everything in between. Big stars including Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson and Will Smith feature in the latest movies so be sure to book in your date nights or bestie nights and get ready for some seriously good, popcorn-fuelled watching.
Here are all of the best new release movies to see this May.
The Hustle
The hilarious new comedy The Hustle features Hollywood golden girls Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson who come together in the dream combo to celebrate powerful women. The pair are from completely different worlds, although surprisingly more alike than they first believed. Both scam artists, one low rent and one high class, the two join forces to team up on an ultimate mission to take down the dirty rotten men who have (stupidly) wronged them in the past.
Aladdin
An age-old favourite, the exciting tale of Aladdin will hit the nostalgic button for many in this new modern film based off of the Disney classic. The tale of the charming street rat Aladdin and courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine is brought to life with the incredible cast of actors including Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott. With all of the same magic as you would have remembered, Aladdin has a humorous flair and epic special effects making this one a must see.
Aftermath
Set in post-war Germany, The Aftermath is a drama-fuelled story of forbidden love and heart-breaking devastation of life in 1946. Starring Keira Knightly as the lead Rachael Morgan, she arrives in the ruins of Hamburg to reunite with her husband, a British colonel in charge of rebuilding the destroyed city. They are to share their new house with its previous owners, a German widower and his daughter. The tense atmosphere between the two worlds inside the one home collides in the most unexpected and heart-wrenching way.
Brightburn
From the same visionary filmmaker behind Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither, comes the latest superhero horror, Brightburn. A child crash-lands on Earth, but instead of the usual superhero story of becoming a saviour to mankind, he proves to be something far more sinister. This startling, subversive take on a radical new genre of film is unique because unlike most superhero movies, it doesn't follow any of the usual rules.
Godzilla
The newest story Godzilla: King of the Monsters is out this May and is as epic as the name suggests. The heroic efforts of the members of the cryptozoological agency Monarch face off against a gang of god-sized monsters lead by the mighty Godzilla. Colliding with Mothra, Rodan, and his long-time and ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah, Godzilla is pushed to ultimate limits. This movie is full of all of the action and monstrous battles you know and love and will not disappoint.
Warren Miller’s Face of Winter
John Wick 3: Parabellum
Super-assassin John Wick is back again on the big screens and on the run for his life as per usual. This time he is being hunted for a $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking an ultimate rule—taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds. The victim was an important member of the High Table who ordered the open contract. Wick should have been executed already, and it is only a matter of time as he is the target of hit men and women everywhere. Will this finally be the time he doesn’t get so lucky?
