10 Totally Rad Things To Do This Weekend In Auckland

This weekend in Auckland is allllll about food, and we’re totally happy about that. Whether you like to eat socially or prefer a bit of high tea and fashion OR you prefer to do a little good and dress to the nines while you eat, there’s something for you. If food just isn’t your thing (who even are you?!) then don’t worry, there are plenty of things to do in Auckland this weekend for you, too.

Grab those diaries and get planning!

All Weekend

The Social Kitchen Theatre | Tukutai Square, Britomart

The Social Kitchen Theatre is an unmissable series of pop-up experiences at Britomart. No matter what your cooking style is, you’re sure to find some fresh ideas and delicious cuisine at this premium cafe-style space. It is hosted by food writer, stylist and photographer Kelly Gibney, and she will  be joined by international star chef Paul Carmichael and local favourites, including Kyle Street (Depot, Federal Deli), Gareth Stewart (Euro, The Culpeper) and Jason Van Doresten (Cafe Hanoi) and many more. Head along to The Social Kitchen and spend an afternoon thinking, talking and cooking.

Touch Compass | Auckland Town Hall & Bruce Mason Centre

Keep the sprogs happy this weekend with Touch Compass—a dance performance where you can expect magic, surprises and a little bit of cheekiness. But that’s not all! Make sure you hang around afterwards and join in with the workshop where you’ll play some fun games using props and learn movements and actions from the show.

Venus In Fur | Herald Theatre

It’s getting hot and steamy at the Herald Theatre when the stage adaptation of the world’s first S&M novel is difficult to cast for and director Thomas is struggling. This all changes with the arrival of Vanda, who mysteriously knows the text by name and has the same name as the main character…and so begins a battle of wills and a tango for dominance. This is the latest performance by the talented Auckland Theatre Company, with opening night on this Saturday, running through until mid-September.

Thursday 18th August

SkyCITY Variety of Chefs Fine Dining | SkyCITY Auckland Convention Centre

Join Audra Morrice and Nic Watt who will cook up a storm to raise much-needed funds in support of Variety. Variety is all about helping Kiwi kids who have missed out on the basics. Together they will present a specially designed menu with wine matches in a black tie event showcasing the finest Asian-fusion cuisine. The evening will be hosted by Rawdon Christie and Stacey Morrison, and will include special entertainment and an exciting auction. Proceeds from this unforgettable night out go to Variety.

Friday 19th August

Lunchtime Concert Series | Auckland University Music Theatre

Fancy a change of pace for your lunchtime? Head along to one of Auckland Uni’s free concerts. Featuring students from the music school, there should be something for everyone.

Saturday 20th August

Bad Sci-Fi | Observatory Planetarium

For one night only, science fiction and science fact are going head to head at the Auckland Observatory. Watch cult classic films When Worlds Collide or Red Planet Mars in the planetarium and then, if the skies are clear, take a look at the real things through the courtyard telescopes. Enjoy a round of spacies in the foyer before the show and grab some retro snacks to keep you going. Who knows you might even spot some aliens!

Handel’s Oreste | Mercury Theatre

The Auckland Opera Studio and New Zealand’s Barok Orchestra are taking Handel’s classic opera Oreste in a new direction. Stage veterans will be joined by some of New Zealand’s freshest young opera talent to bring this rarely performed opera to the stage. The opera tells a fiery tale of sacrifice and danger. This performance presents a unique opportunity to see some of New Zealand’s best opera talent in a stunning venue and will be a performance not to be missed.

Winter Wine, Shellfish And Seafood Festival | Auckland Fish Market

Head along to the Auckland Fish Market for it’s inaugural Winter Wine, Shellfish and Seafood Festival this Saturday.  It’s free (yay!) and includes samplings of shellfish and vino (if you’re over 18, of course) and they’ll be entertainment, too. If you love oysters as much as us, then you’ll enjoy the first NZ Oyster Opening Championship—the winner of which gets to go to Japan.

Crafternoon Tea Market | Kingsland

We love a good market and this one is no exception. This Saturday from 10am til 2pm, CrafternoonTea Market brings together a collection of artists, crafters and designers from all over Auckland—you may even catch some in action. You’ll find handmade goods, cakes, jewellery, plants, clothing, arts and prints and many more . Make sure you head along with an empty tum as it will be hard to resist the scrumptious food stalls dotted around the market. Find out any additional deets here.

Sunday 21st August

High Tea & Fashion | Hotel Debrett

What better combination can you think of for your sunday afternoon, but to spend it drinking tea from mismatched cups and watching a beautiful fashion presentation. Set in the light-filled atrium of Hotel Debrett, this salon-style show meanders through the space while you sip and savour. And if any of the pieces tickle your fancy, then Hudson Boutique will open after the show for you to indulge some more.
