The Queen’s official b’day has arrived, which means another lovely long weekend for us Aucklanders (thanks, Liz). While most of us tend to ditch this city, if you’re staying put, you won’t run out of great things to do this weekend. From photography and art fests to concerts and pop-up markets, prepare to have a smashingly good Queen’s Birthday Weekend in Auckland.
Auckland Festival of Photography | Various Locations
Photographers and image aficionados please stand up because the Auckland Festival of Photography is back! Taking place from the 2nd to the 24th of June in some of Auckland’s major galleries, awesome project spaces, non-gallery venues and public sites, the festival features a mix of emerging and established artists. There will be workshops, seminars, exhibitions as well as an Annual Commission by Russ Flatt. Waiheke Winter Arts Festival | Waiheke Community Art Gallery
Showcasing more than 30 artists, studios and galleries, the Waiheke Winter Arts Festival is one to bookmark for any art lover. If you spot any works you lurrve, then you might want to head along to the ‘Over a Barrel’ auction, where you can bid on your next piece and enjoy some delicious wine and food.
Queen’s Birthday On Queens Wharf | Queens Wharf
Celebrate Her Majesty on Queens Wharf this weekend. The free three-day event focuses on the music, culture, food and history of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Join Alice and The Hatter at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, or don your ‘Sunday best’ and enjoy a traditional English high tea, all while never leaving the Auckland waterfront. Shed 10 will be transformed into a marketplace with Auckland’s best artisans selling their wares alongside plenty of vintage goodies and food. Take in the bright lights and fast rides of a true English carnival. Put your baker’s hat on and compete in the great Queen’s Birthday cake-off—get creative because there will be some great prizes up for grabs.

The Great Gatsby Era | Hawkins Theatre
Transport yourself back to the ‘20s and ‘30s and enjoy a concert with a bit of glamour and a dash of raddle dazzle. The Great Gatsby Era event at Hawkins Theatre in Papakura will be a celebration of the elegant fashion, poetic lyrics and addictive tunes of the time. Featuring composers such as Gershwin, Berlin, kern, Novello and Noel Coward and artists such as Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday and Judy Garland, it’s sure to get you grooving in your seat.

Avalanche City: The Little Fire Tour | The Powerstation
Kiwi artist Dave Baxter (Avalanche City) brings the Little Fire tour to Auckland this Friday. Taking the stage at the Powerstation, Baxter will be performing his newest single “Little Fire” as well as the smash hit “Inside Out” and many others off his debut and sophomore albums. Make sure you grab your tickets here for a musical start to the weekend.
Daffodils: Benefit Gala | Auckland Town Hall
Anika Moa, Tami Neilson, Julia Deans and Trip Pony join the cast of Daffodils for one special performance of the Kiwi cabaret—Daffodils. It tells the story of farm girl Rose and teddy boy Eric as they fall in love in Hamilton at the lake by the daffodils and will most definitely pull on the heartstrings. Featuring songs from Crowded House, Bic Runga, Dave Dobbyn, The Exponents and many classic ‘60s musicians, this one-time special performance is raising funds to send Daffodils to the Traverse Theatre, in Scotland.

Miss World NZ | SKYCITY Convention Centre
If you’ve ever wanted to witness the glitz and the glam of a Miss World competition, now is your chance! The SKYCITY Convention Centre will be transformed into a stage for the Miss World New Zealand final, where one of the lovely ladies will receive the crown from the Miss World New Zealand 2015 winner Deborah Lambie. Tickets include a dinner and you’re required to wear formal attire but hey—who doesn’t love an excuse to dress up?!
Air Supply: 40th Anniversary Tour | Auckland Town Hall
One of Australia’s most loved musical acts, Air Supply, are back in Auckland to celebrate their 40th Anniversary. Bringing their international hits such as “Lost in Love”, “Love and Other Bruises”, “Now and Forever” and a tonne more. This concert is a must-go for any Air Supply fan but be quick, tickets are running out fast!
Pop-Up Market | Mt Eden War Memorial Hall
Artists, crafters and designers are popping up in Mt Eden this Saturday for a market—one that any market lover won’t want to miss. With all New Zealand-made goods including candles, cakes, kids stuff, jewellery, plants, ceramics, art and prints, you’ll find something to love and take home with you.
