12 Rad Things To Do This Weekend In Auckland

Guess what? It’s the weekend already! Uh hah, that one came around quickly. You can thank the Queen for the short week we’ve had. In case the weekend sprung up on you before you had a chance to make any plans, we’ve got your back. From rugby and a wine festival to World Gin Day and a bike market, there are plenty of awesome things going down in Auckland-town this weekend.

That Bloody Woman | SKYCITY Theatre

Kate Sheppard’s successful campaign to win the vote for women wasn’t exactly a walk in the park, but she did it. Held at SKYCITY Theatre, That Bloody Woman retells Kate’s battle for equality as takes on political patriarch Richard Seddon. The kick-ass punk rock opera is full of insight, intelligence infectious tunes. Theatre-goers will also be able to pick up a post or pre-show burger and beer special from Andy’s Burgers. Women’s rights and burgers, what’s not to love?!

Mana Wahine | Q Theatre

Contemporary dance performance Mana Wahine returns to Q Theatre this weekend. The all-female work created by Okareka Dance Company draws strength from traditional Maori culture to illustrate a performance of dance, theatre and film. The piece is inspired by the true story of Te Aokapurangi, a young maiden from Mokoia Island, who saved her people from slaughter—pretty cool woman if you ask us! The intense, powerful show will have you on the edge of your seat.

Vodafone Pacific Music Awards | Sir Woolf Fisher Arena Vodafone Events Centre

Now in its 12th year, the Vodafone Pacific Music Awards celebrate all things good in Pacific music. The awards will showcase the 2016 finalists as well as performances from both emerging and established Pacific artists. There are 18 finalists in the running for awards including Annie Grace, Te Vaka, Vince Harder and Sol3 Mio. New Zealand’s biggest night of Pacific music is not to be missed! Friday 10th June

Classic Comedy All Stars | The Classic Comedy Club

The work week got you down? Head to The Classic Comedy Club on Friday night for some good ol’ laughter therapy. The Comedy Allstars event showcases an array of comedians including Guy Williams, John Carr, Paul Douglas and Pax Assadi. Brace yourself for two hours of lol-worthy entertainment.

Donnie Darko 15th Anniversary Screening | Academy Cinemas

It’s been 15 years since the release of Donnie Darko—say whaaa? To celebrate, Academy Cinemas are having a one-off screening of the cult-favourite. See Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Jena Malone and Patrick Swayze come to life as they—once again—grace the screen in this coming-of-age thriller. The full details can be found here.

All Blacks vs Wales | Eden Park

Don your black and make your way to Eden Park as the boys are back in town. As part of the 2016 Steinlager Series, the All Blacks are playing their first international game of the year against Wales. The game is guaranteed to be a cracker—it will be the first game since the World Cup under new captain Kieran Read. Click here for ticket details.

World Gin Day | The Gin Room

Apparently World Gin Day is a thing and we’re only too happy to celebrate it. What better way to spend the day than with a visit to Vulcan Lane’s The Gin Room?! Get into the spirit of things (pun intended) with $5 house G&Ts and complimentary Hendricks punch on arrival. 

Hopewalk | Mission Bay

Hopewalk is a national event that aims to bring greater awareness around suicide and promote the awesome suicide prevention agencies here in New Zealand. Auckland Central’s Hopewalk will be meeting at Goldie Street in St Heliers before walking 5km to Mission and onto Okahu Bay. Dress in yellow and join the team because together we are stronger!

Simunovich Olive Estate Annual Harvest Tour & Lunch | The Simunovich Olive Estate

There’s an olive harvest going down this weekend in Auckland. Yup, the Simunovich Olive Estate is hosting their annual harvest tour and lunch this Sunday. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and spend the day learning about their award-winning olive oil with a guided tour and tasting. There are four sessions throughout the day with each including a rustic two-course lunch at Bracu. NZTrio Loft Series #1: Zoom | Q Theatre

Q Theatre’s ever-popular Loft Series kicks off again with a rich and rhythmic line-up. The first show of the three-part series focuses on rhythm, perspective and richness. The show features works by John Musto (USA), Chris Watson (NZ), Elliott Carter (USA) Alexander Zemlinksy (Austria). Now in its fourth year, the New Zealand Boutique Wine Festival is back this weekend. Showcasing vino from boutique wine producers, it’s an opportunity for wine lovers to cross paths with wine makers. They’ll be discussions lead by some of the country’s most influential wine commentators as well as wine master classes and a tasting menu at Everybody’s. Oh, and needless to say, they’ll be plenty of wine tasting.

The Great Auckland Bike Market | The Cloud

I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike…sorry, we couldn’t resist. If you love all things bikes, then head to The Cloud this Sunday for The Great Auckland Bike Market. Take along your bike and bike bits to sell or swap—or pick up a brand new bike at one of the many retailers there on the day.
