Whether you’ve just tackled the first work week of 2018, or you’re basking in the final weekend before it all begins again (or you’re in neither camp—lucky you!), the weekend has rolled right around and it’s time to make the very most of it! If you’re anything like us, you’ve promised yourself to make 2018 the biggest year yet, and what better way to start than seizing the weekend for all it has to offer?! This weekend Auckland’s serving us some of the very best in tennis, theatre, and most importantly—food! Get your stretchiest pants on and round up the squad for a cracker of a weekend ahead at these wonderful events!

Takapuna Beach Summer Days Festival

Takapuna is the ultimate place to be allll weekend long! This FREE event will be hustling and bustling with events perfect for everyone, including chowing down some stellar nosh from one of the food vendors or space to set up a picnic! Friday is music and movie night, with easy-listening tunes from 4pm and catch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at 9pm! It’s a lazy Saturday with the groovy Jazz on the Green for a chill arvo, and Sunday is Family Beach Day with all-day acoustic jams, food trucks, and heaps of entertainment—round up the fam for a fun filled weekend on the shore!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Auckland summer staple Pop Up Globe is back for another stand out season! Regarded as Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece, A Midsummer Night’s Dream will enchant you with side-splitting comedy with a dash of beautiful poetry only Shakespeare could achieve. Fusing Jacobean costumes, lyrical poetry with Maori folklore and language, Pop-up globe introduces this flagship production to you with pride. Transport back 400 years into the past and sit amongst the space the plays they were written, whether its your first time or hundredth, it’ll be a night to remember.

Auckland Live Summer in the Square: Latin Fiesta Weekend

¡Vamos a la fiesta! Get ready to party because Aotea Square is transforming into a Latin Fiesta for Auckland Live Summer in the Square! There’s celebrations all weekend long, where the food will be delectable and the outfits delicious—we expect nothing less from our vivacious friends across the other side of the world! There will be two stages sizzing with Latin music and feel-good rhythms, including an authentic Mexican mariachi band and Cuban band Ashé Cuba’s high-energy tunes!

The Merchant of Venice

Pop-up Globe is back and better than ever, presenting you with one of Shakespeare’s classics The Merchant of Venice. Already deep in debt to his best friend, Bassiano requires one more loan to woo and win the wealthy heiress Portia, unaware that when the due date comes to repay the debt, he will be gambling for his life! Full of wit, drama and disguise that Shakespeare has become legend for, this is based on the performance tradition going way back to 1614, performed by the Buckingham Company—an all-male company of actors and musicians around the world.

Zirka Circus

Back with its fifth tour of New Zealand, Zirka Circus is bringing even more mind-boggling, spectacular entertainment to our shores! Their new show Send in the Clowns is more spectacular than ever, with performing arts, theatre, and hilarity all wrapped up in a world-class performance! Whether you’re all about the action-packed daredevil acts or beautiful ballet, there is something for everyone in this stellar show! This is one adventure-filled (and animal-free!) circus for the whole family to love.

ASB Classic

The ASB Classic is returning to Auckland as the highlight on every Aucklander’s January calendar. Bringing back more world-class tennis, food and drink, fashion and entertainment, expect two weeks of stellar tennis action right in our city! Forget Wimbeldon, you’ll be served up a fantastic line up of women’s and men’s players on-court, as well as some of the country’s most sought-after musicians and chefs delivering deliciousness and entertainment off court.

Bug Lab Lates

Cocktails, street foods, and… bugs? Yep, you heard that right—this adults only (a.k.a kids at heart) event starts with a complimentary cocktail and a fabulous selection of Auckland street food faves with live entertainment. Then enter the magical world of Te Papa and Weta Workshop’s thrilling science exhibition, discovering the genius of bugs bound to fascinate and delight even the harshest bug critics and scaredy cats!

Armed with only a few memories, determination, and Google Earth, this true story follows a quest to find a young boy’s roots in India. End your work week and say hello to the weekend with food truck delights, a themed drink from the pop-up bar and this stellar movie under the stars. The lip-smacking line up of food trucks include Crepes a Go Go, Fritz’s Weiners, Judge Bao, Puha & Pakeha and so much more! Bring a beanbag and maybe some tissues, too—this one is going to pull at the heartstrings!

The Extravaganza Fair

Roll up, roll up to the largest and newest travelling event, The Extravaganza Fair, making its way to Matakana this summer. Bringing a whole lot of market stalls, arts and craft, food, musical entertainment, circus shows, performers and kids shows! Bringing back some old school nostalgia with sack races, tug of war and musical bean bags, this fair is your childhood dream come to life! Foodie delights include the Steampunk Food Truck, Dickinson’s Gastronomic Emporium, Lucky’s Fresh Juice Joint and Havana Coffee Works—even the names have us excited! Get ready for a full day of jam-packed fun for the whole family!

The Möet Ice Brunch  

This is the ultimate luxe brunch! The drink of the summer, Möet Ice, is hosting a brunch to kick off the ASB Classic Men’s Final off in style! Join this glamorous all-white brunch within the Champagne Lounge at the ASB Classic. Kick off the day right, sipping on Möet Ice and indulge in a Sugar Club inspired menu designed by Peter Gordon himself. The resident Möet DJ will be there to get the party started before the highly-anticipated ASB Classic. In true tennis and Möet Ice fashion, make sure you don your best tennis whites for a day of sunshine and the ultimate day of tennis!

Matakana Village Farmer’s Market

Our fave escape from the hustle and bustle of Auckland is where you’ll find artisans, growers and farmers in the Matakana region who have a passion for all things produce. You’ll find fresh, yummy goods to stock up on as well as artisan baking, Italian sausages, organic chocolate, flowers, fine wines, olive oil and the all-important freshly brewed morning coffee—with locally roasted beans nonetheless. Live music will be keeping you company in this picturesque wee spot for a perfect morning market. It’ll be all about “me time” with their dog sitting service—for just a gold coin donation, you can have your pooch looked after for a whole hour of silent bliss!

Moveable Feast Matakana

Make a day of it in Matakana! Hosted by Matakana’s Te Rata Wine, this scrumptious festival brings some of Auckland’s best street food right to the heart of Matakana village! There’s an unreal line-up of fabulous food—where the hardest thing you’ll be doing is choosing your feast—served alongside Te Rata’s beautiful natural wines, handmade sodas and cider, as well as craft beer on tap! Hit it up after nursing your food coma from the scrummy offerings at the morning markets.
