Heads up, guys. There’s so much to see and do in Auckland this weekend, the hardest part will be deciding where to begin. Get ready to plan wicked times with your best friends/family/SO/dog etc, eating delish food, watching some epic theatre and getting some Shakespeare.

The Merchant of Venice

Pop-up Globe is back and better than ever, and this weekend they're rocking The Merchant of Venice. Full of wit, drama and disguise, it's a Shakespearean classic, and it's performed in a replica of the 1614 Globe Theatre. It'll be performed by the Buckingham Company—an all-male company of actors and musicians from around the world.

Sawmill, Snacks and Sounds Takapuna

Burger Burger’s bringing all of the live tunes, refreshing beers and deliciousness to Taka all summer long, and you’re all invited. Joined by the good people at Sawmill Brewery, you’ll be treated to their thirst-quenching pilsners, Crystal Lager, XPA and Hoppy Hibiscus Gose. There'll be live music all weekend long, too. Bring it on.

Zirka Circus

Back with its fifth tour of New Zealand, Zirka Circus is bringing even more mind-boggling, spectacular entertainment to our shores. Their new show, Send in the Clowns, is more spectacular than ever, with performing arts, theatre, and hilarity all wrapped up in a world-class performance. This is one adventure-filled (and animal-free!) circus for the whole family.

I Am Not Your Negro—Friday Films

Head to Silo Park for a perfect way to bring in the weekend. Round up the troops for a night of food trucks galore, drinks flowing from the Silo Bar, and a great movie! They’re bringing you one of the most loved and acclaimed films from 2017’s NZIFF, I Am Not Your Negro. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, this documentary takes inspiration from James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript and recounts the lives of his close friends and civil rights leaders Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and Medgar Evans. The delish food trucks include Fritz’s Wieners, House of Dumplings, Philppe’s Poutine. Niiiice.

Classical Weekend: Auckland Live Summer in the Square

This is the perfect symphony for a chill Friday hang, with a range of musical talent and classical experiences for some orchestral bliss! Be serenaded by the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra’s Young Achievers, the Royal New Zealand Navy Band and New Zealand Opera. You can even sneak a peek inside the Auckland Town Hall Organ.

Movies in Parks: La La Land

Did you miss one of the biggest movies of 2017? Not to worry—watch this all-singing, all-dancing musical comedy back on the big screen and under the stars! Following a jazz pianist who falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles, La La Land swooped up six Academy Award wins in 2017. Get to Mairangi Bay Park early to snag a fab viewing spot. The event kicks off at 7pm.

Bug Lab Lates

Cocktails, street foods, and… bugs? Yep, you heard that right—this adults-only (a.k.a kids at heart) event starts with a complimentary cocktail and a fabulous selection of Auckland street food faves, plus live entertainment. Then enter the magical world of Te Papa and Weta Workshop’s thrilling science exhibition, discovering the genius of bugs. It's bound to delight even the harshest bug critic.

Moveable Feast Matakana

Hosted by Matakana’s Te Rata Wine, this scrumptious festival brings some of Auckland’s best street food right to the heart of Matakana village. There’s an unreal line-up too—served alongside Te Rata’s beautiful natural wines, handmade sodas and cider, as well as craft beer on tap! Hit it up after nursing your food coma from the scrummy offerings at the morning markets.

Fat Freddy’s Drop

This is one of the first times you’ll see these Kiwi legends since they officially sold out their largest headlining show in 2017! You’ll have a chance to see Fat Freddy’s Drop live in the beautiful surroundings of Villa Maria Estate, where you’ll experience brand new songs off the upcoming album, as well as our fave summer classics we can’t get enough of. Special guests include Ladi6 and Salmonella Dub!

House of Vans

It’s been just announced that House of Vans is hitting our shores! This is one of the biggest skating events, making its home in Shed 10 for a day packed full of skate-based events. This day-long community event, spread over two sessions, is absolutely FREE—you’ll find skating by the Vans team, a skate-inspired marketplace, live grip tape application, DJs after hours and even tattooing (if you’re feeling adventurous). After 4pm the event transforms into an epic R18 party with some sick international bands.

Auckland Live Summer in the Square: Grand Opening

The Barbarians, celebrated freedom-fighters from Wellington’s theatre scene, have got hold of the keys to one of Auckland’s most beloved venues—The Civic. This is a tour-de-force celebration of the world of performing arts, featuring a host of local collaborators. It's gonna be one hell of an immersive and interactive show where you’ll be walking through the theatre and getting up to no good.

There’s live music from midday too.
