Free you say? That’s right! We here at The Urban List understand it’s coming into a financially tough time of year—Christmas prezzies, your summer holiday and also doing the obligatory pre work-break catch ups.
All these things can be a little rough on the bank balance, instead of blowing your budget before hand, we’ve rounded up this handy dandy list of free things to do this month so you can save those pennies for when summer hits.
#1 Coast Collective Markets
The Coast Collective markets are one of the few you don’t wanna miss. Only held over the summer months, these markets are filled with 40+ stalls, five food trucks, delicious coffee, and the best part—live music. If you can’t afford to buy anything, you can at least enjoy a few good tunes. Find out the details here.
#2 G.O.O.D. Friday’s At The Botanist
Summer is well and truly on its way, so why not spend the month of November celebrating? The Botanist will be. Head to this City Works Depot spot on your Friday afternoon and enjoy some beats from Head’s Garage while soaking up the sun. The opening night is Friday Nov 4th, but keep an eye out for the following ones here.
#3 Orewa Surf Sounds Concert
Guy Fawkes is coming, woot! This year, head to the Orewa Sounds Surf Concert & Fireworks display. There’ll be amusement rides, food trucks, raffles and music from MoreFM. Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and settle in for an evening of fun. Pop, bang, whizz!
#4 Urban Street Fest
Aucklanders have fallen in love with street food, and you went crazy when we first announced an indoor street fest was hitting our town. This roaming festival has hit Kingsland, Ponsonby and in November—Grafton, at Wold of Water Street. Plan for an awesome night out filled with delicious food and live music. Find the deets here.
#5 The Federal Street Festival
Fed Street comes alive with its party vibe over two days this November with the Federal Street Festival. On the 11th and 12th, the street shuts to traffic and a world of fun awaits. Party like it's 1999 on the Friday night with the live music from your faves—Ladi6, Che Fu, Two Many Chiefs, and DJ Karn Hall. Have some family fun the next day with cup-cake decorating, face-painting and bubbles...but when day turns to night, the party begins again. If you've a few pennies to spare, get yourself some Fed St dollars and indulge in some eats from your fave Fed St eateries—Depot, The Fed, MASU, Gusto at The Grand, The Grill by Sean Connolly and more.
#6 Yoga In The Park
Find your Zen with a Sunday morning yoga session in the park. Starting from November 13 and held once a month, there’ll be a free yoga session held at the Auckland Domain. The class is kid-friendly, and animal-friendly, although your pet may show you up at some downward dog. Check the details here.
#7 Free Movies In The Square
Northwest Shopping Centre is hosting a free outdoor cinema club over the months of summer. What better way to watch a movie then bundled up in blankets and the stars surrounding you? To find out the film line up visit their website.
#8 Visit Auckland Art Gallery
Get cultured and look at some art at the Auckland Art Gallery. There’s a bunch of different exhibitions on display, so do your research and find the one to suit your taste.
#9 Book Festival
If you enjoy getting stuck into a good book, then the Book Festival is where you’ll want to be this month. Bibliophiles will get a chance to get up close and personal with some writers from around New Zealand. And, if you’re trying your luck at getting your own book published, there’ll be insider info on how to get your foot in the door. The festival is on November 5 from 10am – 4.30pm. #10 Parnell Festival Of Roses
While the first day of spring was officially September 1st, it’s truly only starting to feel warmer lately. To celebrate spring, Parnell is holding Festival Of Roses, while there are rose pruning exhibits there’s also a bunch of other stuff going on. We’re talking about food stalls, arts and crafts, and some crazy characters to entertain the kids.
#11 Scandinavian Christmas Market
We know it seems weird to start celebrating Christmas already, but hey, it only comes one day a year, so why not drag it out? The Scandinavian Christmas Market is in its fifth year and celebrates the Scando culture—think, beautifully dressed people, amazing crafts, and of course some live music. The market will be held at the ASB Showgrounds on Nov 12th from 9am-3pm.
#12 Volume Exhibition at Auckland Museum
Learn to appreciate New Zealand music at the Volume Exhibition at the Auckland Museum. The exhibition runs from the end of Oct through to May 2017, and tells the stories of New Zealand music. Learn about the infamous Poi E song, try your hand on the decks with a set up of a recording studio, and go back in time browsing records in a 1980s record store.
#13 Beats By Bingo
It flows even better then Beats By Dre, right? Pocket Bay & Kitchen is hosting a bingo show, gather a crew and get involved. Listen to some gangster beats while showing up the table next to you at bingo. There’s even prizes up for grabs! The first gig starts on Tues 1st Nov from 7.30pm—9.30pm. #14 Body, Mind & Soul
Reset yourself after a hard days’ work with a yoga, breathing and meditation class. Every Tuesday between the hours of 7.00pm—8.00pm at the Mt Albert War Memorial you can attend a free class. Trust us, you’ll be thanking us later!
#15 Open Mic Night
Whether you’ve been waiting for your 15 minutes of fame, or you just want to have a laugh, this is your answer. Takapuna Bar will be hosting an open mic night session every Tuesday throughout the month of November, from 8.30pm onwards. So go on, show us what you’ve got, or at least support those on the stand!
#16 LEGO Christmas Tree Launch Party
Whether you’re young, old, or somewhere in between, LEGO holds a fascination for us all. All those colourful little bricks coming together to create all sorts of things! This year, it’s going to be a Christmas tree. Yep, you heard that right. Set up in the heart of Aotea Square, this tree is going to be taller than a two-storey house and built from a whopping half a million LEGO blocks.
Celebrate the jolly season at the launch party on November 25th.
#17 Bellota's 10th Birthday Fiesta
There's nothing better than a birthday when the guests get the gifts! Auckland's fave Spanish restaurant, Bellota, celebrates its whopping tenth birthday this November, from 17th-23rd November. Not only will there be Latin bands and DJs, Salsa and Samba dancers, but also FREE tapas every day from 5-6pm during their celebrations. So head along, and get ready to arriba!
