Sometimes things are better when they’re from under the sea. Whether it’s taking to crab with a hammer, slurping up a fresh oyster or gobbling up crispy skinned snapper, there’s something spesh about seafood.

To help satisfy your kaimoana cravings, we dove into Auckland’s seafood offerings, caught the best and popped them into this handy list.

Here are 20 of the best seafood dishes in Auckland.

  1. The seafood platter at Ostro is theee business. We’re talkin’ ceviche, shellfish, fish mousse, prawns, mussels, oysters, Cloudy Bay clams and grilled sourdough. It’s made for two but you’ll want to go at it solo.
  2. Auckland’s obsession with the turbot sliders from Depot has no expiration date—they’re that damn divine. If anyone knows the preserved lemon mayo recipe, holla.
  3. Now we’re not sure what the ‘sunny flavours of Spain’ are exactly, but we can vouch that they’re mighty fine in Ika’s slow cooked octopus dish.
  4. Marinated in saikyo miso and yuzu then cooked to perfection on the robata grill, the black cod at MASU is one of the best seafood dishes in town.
  5. Cibo are aaall about that crispy skinned fish served with chipotle shrimp, minted pea salad and prawn cracker. It’s a total catch.
  6. FISH does a moreish seafood stew. It’s loaded with mussels, clams, prawns, fresh fish, seared scallops and needs to get in your mouth ASAP.
  7. Although Harbourside’s menu is brimming with seafood dishes to try, our taste buds always seem to gravitate towards carbs and cheese. Promise us you’ll order a side of prawn mac ‘n’ cheese with crayfish béchamel. Mind. Blown.
  8. Feast like royalty via 700g of Red King crab at The Crab Shack. Swimming in garlic butter and lemon, this crab pot is a messy delight.
  9. If paella is your kettle of fish, wander on over to SPQR. This Ponsonby restaurant dishes out a decidedly tasty seafood and chorizo paella.
  10. Let’s taco’bout FishSmith’s spiced fish tacos. Two fresh tacos with fish fillets, slaw and a fresh-as-can-be side salad, these babies are a takeaway fave.
  11. Don’t be shell-fish! Leigh Sawmill’s gratuitous pizza is big enough to share (and 100% worth the drive up North). The fresh fish, shrimp, capers, aioli and lemon combo is one we’ll never tire of.
  12. We’re a sucker for Soul Bar’s snapper. The glorious union of sage crushed ‘tatoes, tahini yoghurt, and coriander and walnut vinaigrette will be a party in ya mouth.
  13. If you’re scouring the city for traditional Belgium-style mussels, why not go straight to the source? Dive into one kilo of New Zealand native green lipped mussels at The Occidental. They come with frites, their famous housemade mayo and your choice of saaauce (we dig the creamy white wine and garlic).
  14. Enjoy your seafood at the highest heights—The Sugar Club. We’ve fallen hard for their spiny crayfish and Otago saffron linguine and you will, too.
  15. They’ve just made our Best Burgers list, but Burger Burger’s market fish burg deserves a spot in the seafood round-up. Panko-crumbed fish, caper dill mayo, tomato jam and rocket, this beauty definitely needs your attention.
  16. New Ponsonby Central player, Fish Fish, is already #winning on the ceviche front. Think a beautiful bowl of kingfish, coconut milk, chili, lime, coriander and Granny Smith. Mmm, mmm!
  17. Feeling like a fish out for water with all this seafood chat? If you’re not the biggest fan of the fishy stuff, we recommend giving laksa a go. KK Malyasian Cuisine does a top-notch curry seafood version. There’s plenty of oodly noodles for when you need a break from the prawns, squid and fish balls.
  18. You might like your seafood sandwiched between a soft, steamed milk bun. If that’s the case, get amongst Chinoiserie’s squid gao bao. Fried squid, sambal lemon mayo, num-dim dressing, daikon, carrot and coriander—it’s a light (and right) way to get your squid fix.
  19. What’s a seafood list without Swashbucklers?! Swashies makes a stellar New Zealand whitebait fritters, which you can enjoy right by the water’s edge.
  20. Regulars at The Street Food Collective, The COD Father lads know classic f ‘n’ c’s better than anyone. Battered terakihi, chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce make for a delicious fishy feed.
