December? Already? Yep, it’s the last month of 2015 and it’s time to make the most of living in this fabulous city of ours with this list of things to do in Auckland.
There’s plenty of Christmassy things to do but also some great music coming to our shores, markets to spend up large and there’s an evening with talk show queen Oprah.

Santa’s Enchanted Forest | 24th November—24th December
One of the truly magical spots to visit Santa each year is at Smith & Caughey’s on Queen St. Head to the ground floor where Santa’s Helpers will take you to the Enchanted Forest via Mrs. Santa’s Snow Garden, where Santa will be waiting to hear all about what you really want for Christmas. If you don’t feel like queueing, book in for a little extra time and receive a gift and pics.
Franklin Road Lights | 1st—24th December
Listed as one of the 10 Most Romantic Things To Do In Auckland, head along to Ponsonby’s Franklin Road for a fairy light delight. Each year, residents light up their houses to create a magical vibe that everyone can enjoy.
Summer In The Square | 2nd December—19th February 2016
Transforming the heart of Auckland into a lush lawn of music, live performances, DJs, food trucks and dancing, there’s plenty to do at Aotea Square this summer.
Stephen Fry Telling Tales | 2nd—3rd December
A gifted storyteller, Stephen Fry comes to New Zealand with his show Telling Tales. The English actor, screenwriter, author, journalist and director will be telling some of the most marvellous stories ever heard in this evening of utter fun.
Beauty And The Beast | 4th—5th December
Be mesmerised by this fairy tale, which stars more than 180 of Auckland’s best young performers, this December in the ASB Theatre at the Aotea Centre. Beauty and the Beast features all the songs you know and love, it promises to be a fantastic show—but with only three performances, you’ll want to book your tickets now.
Onehunga Christmas Lights | 4th December
Head to Jellicoe Park for this annual event of face painters, entertainers, carols and (of course) Santa himself at Onehunga Christmas Lights. Local schools help provide the entertainment and the evening will finish with the traditional lighting of the tree.
Gin Wigmore | 4th December
One of New Zealand’s favourite stars, Gin Wigmore performs in the Great Hall at The Town Hall showcasing her new album, Blood to Bone. Featuring hit singles ‘New Rush’ and ‘Written in the Water’, and after her stellar performance at the VMAs it promises to be a fab night out.
Christmas At The Zoo | 5th December
Get together with friends and family for an evening of roving entertainers, caroling elves, face painting and the singing Santa show at Auckland Zoo. There will also be special animal encounters and Minion characters for added fun at Christmas At The Zoo.
Auckland Fair | 6th December
With 137 stalls, the Auckland Fair at Queens Wharf is an epic opportunity to buy art, prints, homewares, clothing, furniture, toys…the list goes on, but let’s just say it’s ideal for ticking off that Christmas shopping list.
ASB Santa’s Bach | 6th-24th December
There’s Santa in the snow, but our Kiwi Santa just loves the sunshine and you can visit him at the ASB Santa’s Bach at Silo Park. This is a fully interactive experience that includes crafts, contraptions, a sleigh ride and more. This is also your chance to give—this Santa encourages you to bring your own gift or donation, which they’ll pass on to the Auckland City Mission.
Christmas Lights, MOTAT Nights | 11th-13th December & 18th-24th November 15
Get into the festive spirit at MOTAT this December. MOTAT is on the list of the top 50 Things You Should Have Done If You Live In Auckland and this is one way to experience the heritage buildings and streetscapes all lit up in fairy lights. There will also be live entertainment, tram rides and Santa at Christmas Lights, MOTAT Nights.
Devonport Christmas Festival Market | 6th December
Watch the Santa Parade down Victoria Road and then head to Windsor Reserve for the Devonport Christmas Festival Market that includes the Devonport Craft & Fine Food Market, Dance in the Park, the toy library, sausages, bake sales, face painting and much more.
Silo Cinemas | 4th, 11th and 18th December
Another to-do on our list of 50 Things You Should Have Done If You Live In Auckland AND one of the 10 Most Romantic Things To Do In Auckland is watching an outdoor film at Silo Cinemas. Kicking off on Friday 4th December with Cool Runnings, it is followed by Elf and Gremlins on subsequent Fridays.
Britomart Day Out | 12th December
One of the best precincts in Auckland, Britomart’s Day Out is the perfect time to get all your Christmas shopping done in a day (trust us, it’s possible). There will be sales, specials, giveaways and live entertainment. As well as activities and a visit from Santa to keep the sprogs happy. Treats and goodies will also be handed out by helpers.
Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park | 12th December
Held at the Auckland Domain, Christmas in the Park is one of locals’ favourite things to do in Auckland. With a great line up of celebrity and talented musos and dancers, enjoy Christmas favs mixed up with a variety of songs that have absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. Take a blanket and pack a basket of goodies for a fun night of entertainment.
Ed Sheeran | 12th December
If Christmas isn’t your thing, then head to Mt Smart Stadium for an evening with soulful singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran. His humble attitude and rocking songs have seen him quickly grow to one of the world’s favourite musicians. Get your tickets here.
AC/DC | 12th December
They’ve a mighty career spanning more than four decades and now AC/DC returns to Auckland in their Rock or Bust World Tour. With special guests Shihad and Villainy, it will be a night to remember.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra | 12th December
Following the release of their highly acclaimed third album, Multi-Love, this is the first time Unknown Mortal Orchestra has performed in New Zealand since the 2014 Laneway Festival. Held at the St James Theatre, you can get your tickets here.
An Evening With Oprah | 16th December
The talk show queen comes to Auckland for the first time ever and for one night only. Oprah has managed to create connections with people all around the world for more than 25 years and is well known for her business acumen, warm heart and generous personality, it’s bound to be one of the best things to do in Auckland this December. New Zealand Herald Boxing Day Races | 26th December
Another thing to tick off our 50 Things You Should Have Done If You Live In Auckland is the Boxing Day Races. Running for more than 150 years, they’ve become an institution. Get dressed up in your finest and head to Ellerslie Racecourse for a day of high fashion, entertainment and socialising…oh and racing.
Highlife NYE | 31st December
Head to Waiheke Island this New Year’s Eve for one of the best parties of the year at Highlife. With DJ’s, live acts, dancers, performers, gourmet food, drinks and a fantastic fireworks display to start 2016 with a bang, it is one of the best things to do in Auckland on New Year’s Eve.
