One of the most scrumptious months in the Auckland calendar is back and we can’t be any happier about it! The Effect | 1 August—12 August
Revel-makers Fractious Tash bring you the exclusive New Zealand premiere of The Effect as part of Q Theatre’s Matchbox Season 2017. This shatteringly intelligent play won the Critic’s Circle Best Play Award in London, before transferring to Broadway. Connie sees Tristan. Tristan sees Connie. Hearts pound, pulses soar, thoughts race. Pupils dilate, palms sweat, balance reels. New Zealand International Film Festival | 1 August—6 August
Take refuge from the colder days in a cosy cinema and get transported into a different world at this year’s New Zealand International Film Festival. Featuring over 150 films and documentaries are curated for this festival by a team of programmers visiting international premier festivals. New Zealand’s Best Short Film competition returns for the sixth year, where you could be part of voting for the top New Zealand short! Weber Bros Circus: Adrenaline | 2 August—5 August
It’s time to tighten your seatbelts and prepare to be dazzled, the circus extraordinaire Weber Bros Circus are back after a six-year world tour and are ready to rock your world. Expect extreme stunts, hilarious acts and daring moments that’ll have you on the edge of your seats. Signature acts like the Globe of Death, freestyle motor cross and even the Human Cannon are on the cards for a circus spectacular like you’ve never seen it!
The Truck Stop | 3 August
After a standout debut, The Truck Stop is gracing La Cigale once again for a night filled with live music, good vibes and more food trucks than you could fit in your stomach (challenge accepted!). Find a pozzy next to one of their heaters, grab a brew from the bar and tuck into some of Auckland’s favourite street food vendors! The line up is looking to be particularly scrumptious and includes Little Yellow Food Truck, Double Dutch Fries, Nitro Cow Gelato, The Rolling Pin, Temaki Truck, Judge Bao and Pork ‘n’ Beans! As always, La Cigale will be providing some delicious market food, too!
Road to Beervana | 4 August—9 August
Beer lovers, get ready for a week of frothy fun! Though the event celebrating all things beer may be in Welly, it doesn't mean us Aucklanders can't get in on the piece of the action! Road to Beervana is a week leading up to this beer fest, and it's set to be a good one! Lovebucket investigates the similarities between sour beers and natural wines where you can put your taste buds to the best with a cheese accompaniment at the Wild Ferment event. Funk Estate and Fine Wine Delivery Co. will be matchng brews with numerous cuts of beef for a match made in heaven, while Vultures’ Lane Craft Beer will be serving up previews of the exciting brews they’re set to offer at Beervana. Mat Thomson and Hallertau’s Steve Plowmon are exploring beer cocktails (yes, really!), whisky barrel aged beer, beer barrel aged whisky, their work-in-progress samples and the latest seasonal offerings from Hallertau. There’s something for everyone on this road—even gin lovers! Volstead Trading Company are hosting a Gin and Juice event matching hoppy, aromatic, bitter beers of Auckland’s Liberty Brewing with Beertique’s portfolio of UK gin. Go on, hop(s) to it!
Wholly Brekkie | 5 August—6 August
One of Aucklanders’ fave meals of the day is reimagined at Wholly Brekkie! Join Megan May of Little Bird Organics and acclaimed chef and media personality Simon Gault for a first-time collaboration to demonstrate how breakfast can indeed be the most masterful meal of the day. These two food warriors will present a first of its kind breakfast degustation experience to leave you inspired, enhanced and enlightened with this plant-based food journey perfect for gluten-free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan diets!
Sunday Sumthin’ Brothers Movie Night: Labyrinth | 6 August
A brew and an 80’s classic—what more could you ask for? Movie nights are back at Brothers for Sunday Sumthin’, a celebration of culture every Sunday at their iconic CityWorks location. Labyrinth is the movie of choice, and what a choice it is! Starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, watch as Sarah is transported into a fantasy world of myth, magic, evil spells and wondrous entertainment.
LATE At The Museum | 9 August
What does a “real New Zealander” look like? Who are our allies in a post-Trump world? How do we confront our privilege when we can’t see it? These questions and more will be up for discussion in Auckland Museum’s new smart talk series. The first of four, “Home Sweet Home?” kicks off in August looking at immigration in New Zealand this election year. Guests include filmmaker Roseanne Liang, writer and broadcaster Ali Ikram, researcher and Maori spokesperson for Migrants and Refugee Rights Campaign (MARRC) Dr Amara Rata and Massey University’s Professor Paul Spoonley. It’s set to sell out so make sure you get a ticket and secure your seat at this thought-provoking late night event!
Orphan’s Kitchen Breakfast Co-lab | 11 August
Ever experienced a Thai-inspired breakfast before? Now’s your chance as Orphan’s Kitchen bring back their Breakfast Co-lab, and this time with the delightful Thai restaurant, Saan! Saan’s Head Chef Wichian Trirattanavatin will be serving up a Thai-inspired dish and Orphan’s day chef Tan Nguyen will be dishing up a Vietnamese breakfast dish! Food To Die For | 14 August—15 August

The Ryman Healthcare Season Of Romeo And Juliet | 16 August—24 September

The One Day in France festival graces Shed 10, and consists of a market with 35 stalls offering all things French from pastries, coffee, food, charcuterie, chocolate, crepes, as well as fashion and language lessons, try your hand at pétanque with a glass of Pastis (how it should be done!), French short films and local music—you’ll feel like you’ve transported to France in no time!
