Do you have ten dollars flapping around in your otherwise empty wallet? Don’t head straight to The Golden Arches just yet because Auckland is surprisingly kind to the frugal and the broke. With tacos, burgers and crêpes all on offer for ten dollars and under, there’s no need to spend the night at home weeping over a bowl of two-minute noodles. Here are Auckland’s best bang-for-your-buck eats for less than $10!

  1. Barilla Dumpling in Balmoral: Kicking off this list of cheap eats is none other than Barilla Dumpling. You can get some grub at this Auckland institution for under $10. Think pork wonton soup, savoury pancakes, and soup noodle with vegetables! It’ll be worth any line, we promise!
  2. Best Ugly Bagels in Newmarket and City Works Depot: Choose between 13 (!) delicious Montreal bagels and get change from a tenner at Best Ugly Bagels. We can’t go past the bananarama—fair-trade banana, maple mascarpone, chocolate fudge sauce and chopped peanuts!
  3. Underpass in Auckland City: Underpass is the new after-work haunt with a solid selection of craft beers and wines, but here’s the best bit—all the food is less than $8! There is an assortment of skewers, tacos and even dumplings. More money for those brews, we say.
  4. Daikoku (multiple locations): Ramen! Hot, filling and under $10? Yep, that’s right. Daikoku Ramen has five different salty bowls of goodness to choose from. Think soy ramen, pork ramen and even a curry-topped ramen!
  5. Mexican Café in Auckland City: These guys have been around for awhile and know exactly what they’re doing. They have $10 lunch deals of all your fave Mexican dishes, and grab a fruit blend juice for only another $5!
  6. Nishiki in Freemans Bay and Botany: Get some udon, deep-fried soft shell crab, teriyaki chicken skewers and more for less than $10 each at Nishiki! The whopping ten-page menu will be a feast for your eyes and friendly on the wallet.
  7. Bird On A Wire in Ponsonby and Takapuna: Free-range chicken, tarragon mayo and cos lettuce all wrapped up in a warm baguette is sure to be a winner (winner chicken dinner). Plus, Bird On A Wire has five (!) different desserts on offer all for a mere $10 each.
  8. Bian Sushi in Takapuna and Auckland City: Located in Takapuna and Auckland CBD, all Bian Sushi’s small donburis—including teriyaki chicken, teriyaki tofu, chicken katsu—are yours for under $10. If you’re having sushi cravings though, they also have roll sushi from $1.30 each.
  9. Tanuki’s Cave in Auckland City: The oh-so cosy Japanese eatery, Tanuki’s Cave, specialises in skewers, and you can get ’em for cheap, too. Starting from $4.10, order a few amongst your friends and get some sake to wash it all down. Delish.
  10. Better Burger in Auckland City: You can do better than McD’s at Better Burger. Hamburgers are just $5 or for 50c more, add cheese!
  11. Crêpes A Go Go in Ponsonby: Satisfy your sweet and savoury cravings at Crêpes A Go Go. The menu includes the classic ham and cheese or if you’re feelin’ fancy try the banana, Nutella and coconut—or why not both?
  12. Vulcan Lane Bagels in Auckland City: Out of this unassuming hole-in-the-wall you can find possibly the cheapest smashed avo in the city—just $7! Although with pulled pork, chipotle beef and cheesy melts on Vulcan Lane Bagels’ menu, you’ll find it tricky to choose.
  13. Chinoiserie in Mt Albert: Check out Chinoserie for delicious homemade steamed baos with your choice of chicken, beef, tofu or squid for a measly $8.
  14. Freeman And Grey in Ponsonby: A $4 lunch in Ponsonby seems like an oxymoron but Freeman and Grey really do serve pizza for this implausible price.
  15. Xuxu in Auckland City: When it comes to cheap eats you cannot go past dumplings! Xuxu’s are some of the best with mouth-watering combos such as chicken and shitake or prawn and ginger.
  16. Pok Pok on K Road: Pok Pok has got a range of Thai treats such as satay chicken, spring rolls, pork belly, soft shell crab. So get some friends together cause you’ll wanna try them all. P.S. They do BYO.
  17. Fish Pot Café in Mission Bay: Grab some fush and chups from Fish Pot, cross the road to Mission Bay and enjoy while overlooking Rangitoto. What could be more Kiwi than that?
  18. Mexico in Britomart, Takapuna, Ponsonby and Ellerslie: We can’t go past Mexico for their soft shell tacos. With their every-changing menu and $7 price tag they’ll be sure to keep you coming back.
  19. Sal’s Pizza (multiple locations): If you’re in the mood for a bit of greasy New York-style pizza, head over to Sal’s. One slice is filling enough.
