We launched The Urban List in Auckland at the end of last year, and each week we’ve been letting locals and visitors in on the best things to do in the City of Sails each weekend. If the number of you reading this weekly feature is anything to go by, it seems you love it so much that we’ve decided that Auckland isn’t just about those precious days off—we are a city that is 24/7—and so today we’re starting a new series of awesome things to do during the week.
Call your mates and plan your diaries, because here are our top five picks for this week—get out and enjoy!
Pop Up Globe
It’s been the talk of Auckland, and now the Pop Up Globe has announced that, due to popular demand, it is extending its season and we couldn’t be more excited. This exact replica of the theatre built by Shakespeare and his company way back in 1614, has almost become a part of our cityscape—but not for much longer. If you think the old bard isn’t really your thing, it’s still worth taking one of their guided tours for a little bit of cultured history. If Romeo and Juliet or Twelfth Night sounds like you, then book your tickets and head along—you’ll love it.
Be Part Of A Studio Audience
Love 7 Days or that hilarious pair, Jono and Ben? This week, take your obsession one step further and be a part of the studio audience. Find out what it takes to get these two comedy shows ready for television as the cameras roll. Make sure you bring your funny bone because they’ll be relying on your laughter to egg them on and, really, a live audience just makes it that much better for the poor suckers watching it from their lounge.
It’s time to pull out those leg warmers because ’80s hit movie Flashdance hits The Civic this Thursday. In what promises to be an epic show, it stars none other than Karate Kid Ralph Macchio’s daughter, Julia, in the lead role. This pop culture hit tells the inspirational story of Alex Owens’—a steel welder by day and a club dancer by night—dreams of becoming a professional performer. There’s love and there’s angst and there’s your fave songs that will have you wanting to jump up and perform. What a feeling. Note that due to difficulties with travel, the Wednesday and Thursday morning shows have been cancelled, but it’s your Thursday evening, sorted.
Twenty One Pilots
Wanna turn back time because you’re feeling stressed out? Tonight’s your chance as American alt-pop band, Twenty One Pilots, returns to Auckland for their biggest New Zealand headline show yet. Performing at the Logan Campbell Centre, their infectious energy explores the airlock between adolescence and adulthood in this one-off concert for all ages.
Oh Auckland, our dining options just keep getting better. Like us, we know you’ve got your faves, but sometimes it’s good to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. There’s been a number of new openings recently—Little Jimmy’s in Epsom is your go-to for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even late eats. Further west, Hallertau Brewery has opened its long-anticipated beer garden to make the most of the last of the sun’s rays. There’s dumpling delights at Lucky Lucky Dumplings on K-Road and Thai-inspired yumminess at Balmoral’s Kiss Kiss. Really, it’d be a crime to not try at least one.
Yep, it’s the first week of the school holidays but we’ve got you covered with these 50 Things To Do With Kids In Auckland.
