We’re going to go ahead and say it; Malaysian food has got it going on. It’s the cuisine that keeps on giving, gifting us with the tasty delights of fragrant curries, moreish noodles, punchy rice dishes and our personal fave: piles of buttery roti.

If you’re unfamiliar with the exciting flavours of Malaysian cuisine, it’s time you and your taste buds were educated. To help you get on the buzz, we’ve teamed up with the crew at PappaRich, who serve up some of the best authentic eats in town.

Visit PappaRich’s CBD restaurant and you’ll be faced with a menu of 160 items! For newbies to the cuisine, this might seem a bit daunting, so we’ve gone ahead and found five Malaysian dishes that you NEED to try. Start with these and trust us, you’ll be hooked.

#1 Fried Mee Noodles Or Char Kuay Teow

Malaysia knows a thing or two about oodles of noodle. If you’re only familiar with the ol’ two-minute variety or a takeaway pad Thai, it’s time to get acquainted with what Malaysian has to offer. Try fried mee featuring wok-fried Hokkien, noodles, prawns, potato cubes, tomato, egg and bean sprouts, or go for the classic, smoky char kuay teow. This bad boy is made with flat rice noodles and dotted with prawns and fish cakes. Mmm!

#2 Nasi Lemak

Nasi what? This delicious rice creation is one of the national dishes of Malaysia and is a must-try for Malaysian food rookies. A generous serving of rice is placed in the middle of the plate and surrounded by the likes of curry chicken, sambal prawns, fried anchovies, peanuts, hard boiled egg, cucumber slices and sambal, for a saucy, hot element. Make your way through the components one by one, or mix it all together for a party in your mouth.

#3 Roti Canai

Hands up who’s already in love with roti?! This heavenly flat bread is made by stretching, flipping and rolling fresh dough before being cooked into a flaky, buttery masterpiece. You can enjoy roti canai with almost anything. Use it to mop up dhal, curry sauce and sambal, or indulge your inner sweet tooth and finish your meal with roti bom—a thicker and sweeter roti canai, wound in a spiral and served alongside condensed milk and sugar. Oh-so naughty, but oh-so good.

#4 Laksa

Comfort food doesn’t get much better than a big, steaming bowl of laksa. Dive into chicken, seafood or vege curry laksa is a spicy coconut broth, or be bold and try the punchier asam laksa with an aromantic fish-based tamarind broth. Either way, you’ll be slurping up noodles and leave with a laksa addiction.

#5 Fried Chicken Skin

While not overly traditional, fried chicken skin is one heck of a popular dish in Malaysia. We’re talkin’ crispy, crunchy marinated and deep-fried chicken skin with a delish chilli dipping sauce—it’s every bit as sinful and scrumptious as it sounds.
