A favourite food is like an old friend, a reassuring hug, a little piece of heaven in an otherwise ordinary life. You already know that we here at The Urban List love our food—and we know you do too!  So we put our heads together, asked our besties, and have come up with a (far from exhaustive) list of 50 meals you should have eaten if you call the City of Sails home, from some of the best restaurants, cafes and food trucks in Auckland.

We love everything from elegant meals in fancy restaurants to a dripping kebab from the local, a smoothie our body is so so grateful for, to salted caramel shakes that takes weeks to work off.

Aucklanders…without further ado, here are 50 meals you need to get out and eat. Side note: The below is in no particular order—we love them all.

  1. First things first: breakfast at The Garden Shed with the ‘Blended The Essential’ to drink.
  2. Without a doubt, the degustation menu at Bracu.
  3. Tapas at Vivace—especially the meatballs, haloumi and prawns.
  4. The eye fillet beef plate at O’Connell St Bistro.
  5. Don’t try to resist the chicken salad sandwich with a side of poutine at The Fed.
  6. Forget the pizza in their name (although, yes, it’s good too), but the gnocchi di patate con carciofi is insane at Non Solo Pizza.
  7. The heavenly doughnuts at Little and Friday.
  8. This taco or that? We can’t even choose. Have all the tacos at The Lucky Taco.
  9. There’s always room for the raw snickers cheesecake at The Raw Kitchen.
  10. The 1-metre pizza from Toto’s is an Aucklanders’ right of passage.
  11. If you can get in early and beat the queue, the creamy balsamic mushrooms at Dear Jervois are a fantastic start to the day.
  12. Of course, that damn good fried chicken at Miss Clawdy.
  13. Unleash your inner cave man or woman with the churrasco menu at Wildfire.
  14. Haven’t tried the chicken cheese balls at Tanuki’s Cave? Best you hop to it!
  15. Put on your elastic pants for the spinach borani (plus as many small plates you can squeeze in) at Bodrum Kitchen.
  16. Smash the avo at Orphans Kitchen.
  17. Cure that hangover with a breakfast burger from Ceremony.
  18. A smoothie at Kokako—it’s basically a meal.
  19. The spaghetti agioli at Prego. So perfect. Every. Single. Time.
  20. Dive right into the dumplings at Barilla Dumplings.
  21. You can’t go past the crayfish balls at Baduzzi.
  22. Suck back some shucked oysters from Depot.
  23. Grab yourself a burger from Burger Burger, of course.
  24. Afterwards, head to Little Bird Unbakery for the salad bowl.
  25. Let the experts guide your culinary adventure with the five course tasting menu at Cassia.
  26. A croissant from La Voie Francaise
  27. Totally delicious is the homemade sausage at Apero.
  28. Get your American on with the smokehouse menu at Sweat Shop Brew Kitchen.
  29. A staple is the pork belly and spicy papaya salad from PokPok.
  30. You can’t go wrong with the lamb sandwich, feta, peppers, rocket, lemon and harissa mayo (make sure you add the fries) at Meadow.
  31. Go sky high and eat the crayfish linguini from The Sugar Club.
  32. Choose the whole Chinese roasted duck at The Blue Breeze Inn.
  33. And naturally, the pizza from Dante’s Pizzeria.
  34. Bread and butter lovers should grab a loaf and slather the butter on a French baguette from Olaf’s.
  35. Now get thinking about the Steak Frites at TSG.
  36. All the glorious seafood at The Crab Shack.
  37.  Remember your childhood (only better) with a cheese toastie from The Dairy.
  38. A pie to end all pies from Heaven Scent.
  39. The West Coast white bait fritter and all the wine at SPQR.
  40. Eat your Ramen heart out at Chop Chop Noodle House.
  41. For the essential meeting spot, grab a coffee and sweet treat from Dizengoff.
  42. Wake up and smell the goodness with a crumpet from Kraken Crumpets.
  43. For something positively sinful, grab a dessert from Milse
  44. Keep it classy with a lamb rump at Pilkingtons.
  45. Grab some friends, order as many plates as possible and indulge at The Glass Goose.
  46. The char kuey teow prawn and pork fried rice noodles goes down a treat at Madam Woo.
  47. Eggs bene fans shouldn’t go past Petit Bocal.
  48. Pretty much anything and everything at Ortolana.
  49. The pulled pork at Miss Moonshine’s is totally legit.
  50. The greasy goodness of a White Lady burger.
