By Marilynn McLachlan - 12 Apr 2017

Desperate financial times call for desperate frugal measures. But, you’ll be happy to know  there are quite a number of things to do when you realise you can’t afford that epic holiday you were planning with your BFF or SO.

And, we promise there’s way more to do than just cry (though that’s definitely a big part). We’d say pack your bags but that’s not happening…So instead we’ll say read on Auckland—here are 50 things to do in Auckland when you can’t afford a holiday.

  1. First up, cry.
  2. And what’s the second thing you do when you realise overseas flights are expensive AF? Book an awesome staycation instead. Obvs.
  3. Treat yourself to a European food trip right here in Auckland. These epic restaurants should do the trick.
  4. Hit up Auckland’s best beaches
  5. Been to all of these? Take a day trip to one of these epic beaches. (with views easily mistaken for some long-lost exotic island).
  6. No doubt you’re craving a good dose of adventure. Check out these local camping gems.
  7. #Treatyourself, we’re a talking major pamper sesh. Hot stone massages guys. Really, really good ones.
  8. When you can’t afford a real safari, it’s time for a food safari, duh. Start ticking these bad boys off.
  9. Spoiling yourself is totally necessary right now. So we propose, the ultimate dining experience, high above the city. Who needs a holiday anyway?
  10. Rooftop bar hopping (come on, you need to see Auckland from all perspectives).
  11. Get your hard hat out—tree climbing is where it’s at for an awesome (and hella scary) adrenaline-pumping climb.
  12. Stuff yourself silly with Auckland’s best desserts (let’s be real, you’d be packing on the kilos on your vaycay anyway).
  13. Explore Matakana’s markets before hitting Omaha Beach.
  14. Catch a ferry around Auckland.
  15. Cry some more (naturally).
  16. Culture yourself and visit the Auckland Museum.
  17. Glamping. It’s fancy, secluded and there’s wine. Lots of it.
  18. Go on a road trip and do some strawberry picking (and the best part is, you can eat everything you find). Of course, only when they’re in season.
  19. Get amongst these cheap eats (you know, so you can actually save for a holiday later down the track).
  20. You might not be able to actually go on a holiday but at least you can look like you have, which is why a spa day is definitely on the cards.
  21.  Kayak your way around Auckland.
  22. Drown your travel-sorrows and drink all the wine right here
  23. Start a blog. Maybe about all the awesome things you’ve done in your life. Or maybe about how sad you are that you’re stuck in Auckland. Get creative.
  24. Go canyoning. It’s bloody amazing.
  25. Take your pick from these epic outdoor eats. They’re as close as we’re going to get to an open balcony breakfast in Santorini.
  26. Head to Goat Island. Think snorkeling, glass-bottomed boats and the ocean to float around in.
  27. Culture yourself with a tour of Auckland. Find ghosts, eat Chinese food or go on a beer cycle. We have it all.
  28. Shop it out. Britomart should just about do it.
  29. Go on a seaplane ride.
  30. Take a yoga class and as you stretch, reflect on all the reasons why you didn’t need to go on a holiday anyway (you’re right, there are none).

  32. Continue crying (can’t stop, won’t stop).
  33. But while you’re busy drying your eyes with the dollar bills you don’t have, try watching all of these Netflix docos
  34. Win some serious eye-candy with these restaurants that are packing insane views of Auckland.
  35. Let’s be real. Planning a holiday (with virtually no money) is stressful. Ditch the trip and get yourself to the Ponsonby’s White Spa. And yes, you’ll feel like you’re floating mid-air but without that annoying guy reclining his seat.
  36. Get around Auckland in serious classic style—UberBlack all the way, team.
  37. Glow up and get a tan (for that summer glow to go with the holiday you never really had) at Ponsonby’s Benefit Boutique
  38. Learn to fly. It’s well worth the dosh and so much better than your good ol’ standard passenger flight.
  39. Revamp your entire room.
  40. Keep an eye out for international food festivals. Yes, we all had the dream of eating Nepalese food specifically in Kathmandu but sometimes that’s not an option.
  41. Spend a day on the harbour and sail away on a luxury yacht. You might want to get your friends to chip in for this one.
  42. Tell all your friends not about the countless bar-tops you danced on in Ibiza, but of the crazy zipline you conquered in your very own backyard.
  43. Disappointed with the summer? Warm those bones at one of these hot springs
  44. Get a new hair do at one of Auckland’s best salons
  45. So you’ve always talked about skydiving… now is your time.
  46. A trip to Egypt would have been nice buuuuut a quad bike sand dune adventure where there’s a high chance (read: definite) of stacking it? Sooo much better.
  47. Get yourself to one of these Instaworthy locations. STAT.
  48. Decide that Auckland really is the best place on earth and tick your way through this bucket list
  49. Or, if you’ve been there, done that, then discover all the things you didn’t know you could do in Auckland
  50. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and do what proper adults do. Photoshop yourself jumping into the refreshing waters of the Maldives. Easy.
