A new year has arrived and Auckland hasn’t stopped dishing out the goods. Our fabulous foodie scene means that there are new restaurants and cafes opening up all around the City of Sails—a not-so-very-subtle reminder that Auckland really is the bomb.com.
Here are the brand new Auckland cafes and restaurants that have opened in January. You better hop to it, because we predict many more are coming!
The Shore became a shore thing this month, with newcomer Scout opening its doors in Torbay. With modern design, soft furnishings and food that will make your taste buds sing, it’s a must-visit for any self-respecting foodie. Here, you’ll find old favourites like blueberry pikelets but also new ones like ginger and soy smashed tofu. They’ve also got you well and truly covered if you’ve got a sweet tooth.
The Kimchi Project
This Korean-inspired restaurant and café also serves as a much-needed sanctuary in the heart of the city. Enjoy chicken and prawn dumplings with house-made soy cream and seasonal mushies or chow down on one of their bao buns—some of the best in Auckland. As well as great food, The Kimchi Project also has one hell of a courtyard that allows the sun to soak through as you sit amongst the living walls. Ahhh…bliss!
Porch Bar & Eatery
Nothing beats Tamaki Drive on a hot summer’s day, and now there’s even more reason to head along this famous road—Porch Bar & Eatery! Situated in St Heliers, this sleek and modern venue serves up an array of dishes, morning, noon and night. Enjoy poke bowls, pork tacos or order some shared plates. Or, slide back an oyster or two and sip on cocktails as you soak in the spectacular views.
Another stellar opening on the North Shore is Street Organics. Situated in Takapuna, this café looks after the health-conscious amongst us. It began as a Melbourne café and, following along its Australian success it’s now crossed the ditch. Everything here is made from scratch, including vegan chia puddings and avo on toast. Make sure you sip on some of their colourful lattes like turmeric, matcha or beetroot.
2015 Masterchef runner-up Leo Fernandez has opened up Azon in Parnell and let’s just say we couldn’t be happier. The Filipino restaurant has dishes that are made to share, with punchy flavours and a plush interior. Enjoy the twice-cooked pork belly served on betel leaves or the crispy soft-shelled crab with a Buntaa sauce, rich with garlic and ginger. Their cocktail and wine list will also bring a smile to your dial.
Pt Chev Beach Café
Nothing screams summer like beachside dining, and newcomer Pt Chev Beach Café is no exception. With a beautiful dining room and a dedicated ice cream parlour, it’s pretty much a sun-lover’s dream. There are plenty of healthy options on the menu—the eggs bene with wasabi cream cheese, citrus-cured salmon and charred broccolini is an absolute must. If coffee is your thing, then allow the barista pros to turn your latte into a work of art, or enjoy a fresh smoothie or juice, if you’d prefer.
