7 Free Things to do in Auckland This October

Another month of breaking your monthly promise to save money? Yup, same.

October is among us and it’s, a busy month of celebrating art, beer and Halloween. Let’s be real, we’re still going to eat out at fancy restaurants, sip on overpriced cocktails and surf our fave online
shopping malls. Taking those things out of the equation is not an option.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to create some quality memories but not necessarily having the financial means to do so. Things add up and it can get hella expensive, so here’s your guide to
enjoying this month without emptying out your pockets.

1. End of Oktoberfest

It just wouldn’t feel right to let Oktoberfest conclude so quietly! The Britomart Country Club are hosting an event with live music to conclude the two week German folk festival. The admission fee is free so if you’re all Oktoberfested out, just enjoy the vibes and tunes. If you have some cash to spare, they have traditional food such as hock and schnitzels and of course, beer.

When: Saturday, 30 th September – Sunday, 1 st September (12pm till late)
Where: Britomart Country Club (31 Galway Street, Britomart, Auckland City)

If walking slowly in silence around art galleries and museum’s isn’t your thing, look in to some of the events that Artweek has to offer. Galleries will be open till late and walking tours will be provided. If you don’t want to follow a crowd, feel free to roam around solo and enjoy the creative scenery.

3. Cherry Blossom Season at Cornwall Park

It hasn’t been too long since spring has hit. The sun is starting to shine a little more and the flowers are blooming more and more every day. Go to Cornwall Park and appreciate the pink cherry blossoms that can only be seen around this time in Auckland. You’ll feel like you’re walking in a local park in Tokyo during sakura season. Take this as an opportunity and make a day out of it. Maybe incorporate an outdoor workout session or a nice picnic. Don’t forget to take some photos and start up your floral Instagram aesthetic.

When: Till they stay pretty!
Where: Cornwall Park, (Puriri Drive, Epsom)

4. JFC Food and Sake Expo

Tired of all the greasy battered finger food along with beer at Oktoberfest? Try something different and enjoy some free tastings of Japanese food and alcohol at the JFC Food and Sake Expo. Not only are the tastings free but so is the entry! Sake is known to be derived from the fermentation of rice, using as few ingredients as possible and for not doing too much trouble to our waist lines. But don’t let the purity of the process fool you, this is some strong stuff!

When: Sunday, 15 th October (10am – 5pm)
Where: ASB Showgrounds, Pavilion 6, (217 Greenlane, West Epsom)

5. Salsa Dance Lessons

As mentioned before, spring hit us out of nowhere which means summer will hit us out of the blue even more. The earlier we think about achieving our summer body goals, the healthier we can attain them while avoiding unnecessary crash dieting. Let’s be honest, working out is hard and can be such a drain to get to the gym. So why not break a sweat while actually enjoying yourself and dancing the night away! Mexican Café offer free salsa lessons after 10pm for you to up your physical activity game and learn some new moves.

When: Friday 6 th , 13 th , 20 th and 27 th October (10pm till late)
Where: Mexican Café, (67 Victoria Street West, Auckland City)

6. Old School Halloween

Coming up with an awesome Halloween costume doesn’t always mean spending the big bucks. Look at the tools you already have at home and rock with it! You’d be surprised at little can go a long way. Tie up the lower part of your white button-up shirt and your hair in pigtails, slip on a black tennis skirt, chuck on a grey cardi, find some thigh-high socks and voila! You’re Britney from the infamous Hit Me Baby One More Time era. If you want to be low key, cut up a black t-shirt and become a ninja! No Halloween party coming up for you? You’re never too old to trick or treat!

7. Live At Lula’s
