The end of the year is upon us, which means you’ve pretty much blown all your money on Chrissy presents and champagne (these things happen). Fear not, there are eight free events happening in December that you can afford.
#1 Auckland Live Summer In The Square
From now until the 24th of February, Aotea Square will be taken over by talent and activities as Auckland Live Summer in the Square comes to town. In December, catch a stellar line-up of summer tunes that range from the weird and funky to the cool and jazzy. Don’t miss out on the nightly LEGO® Christmas Light and Sound Show, gardening workshops, e-bike rides and a bunch of dance and theatre performances.
#2 Franklin Road Christmas Lights
Every December Franklin Road gets totally lit—with Christmas lights, that is. In a tradition spanning 20 years, the residents of Auckland's most-festive street go all out, decking their homes with bells and holly and falalalala. You can’t call yourself a true Aucklander unless you do you annual wander down the iconic street.
#3 Summer On Queens
Queens Wharf will be a hub for free activities over summer. This December, Summer on Queens will entertain Aucklanders with an abundance of activities. Expect sunrise yoga, live music, outdoor performances, food stalls, breakdance battles and a drawing club!
#4 Takapuna Beach Christmas Carnival
White Christmases can take a hike. Christmas on the beach is where it’s at! Get into the festive spirit at Takapuna’s Christmas Carnival. Hurstmere Road is going to be taken over on the 10th of December with live music, food, market stalls and even a petting zoo! The carnival will be in swing from 11am to 4pm so make a day of it!
#5 Coca-Cola Christmas In The Park
If you’re not too tired from petting all those little animals at the Takapuna Beach Christmas Carnival, Coca-Cola Christmas In The Park is also on the 10th of December. Kicking off at 7.30pm, the event always attracts huuuge crowds (good luck with parking). This year’s event will be headlined by our own national treasure (OURS, not Australia’s) Stan Walker!
#6 Silo Cinema
Much to our delight, Silo Cinema is back for another year. This year’s programme kicks off on December 2 with a tribute to the nation’s unofficial national anthem: Tearepa Kahi’s doco, Poi E. On December 9th they’ll be screening the much-loved ’89 classic, When Harry Met Sally. Bollywood is coming to Silo Park on December 16th with Bajirao Mastani gracing the famous silo. On December 23rd they’ll screen a classic Christmas film voted for by the public.
#7 Britomart Day Out
Christmas is taking over Britomart on December 10th for the Britomart Day Out. La Cigale market will be in full force with lots of goodies perfect for Chrissy pressies. They’ll also be live entertainment, arts and crafts for the little ones and Christmas trees for sale! Local businesses will be getting on board with discounts on the day.
If you fancy a chill day with good vibes, Devonstock is where it’s at. The aptly named live music event will be held in Devonport’s Windsor Reserve on the 11th of December. Celebrate local tunes in the afternoon sun among some of the most beautiful scenery Auckland has to offer. Six talented kiwi artists will perform Battle of the Bands champs The Rubics. There’ll be plenty of gourmet food, drink, coffee and ice cream too, so bring a beanbag, a deck chair, or relax on the grass because Devonstock has all the ingredients for one heck of a good December day.
