Sorry, guys, but we can’t stop talking about weddings. These love, laugh and fun-filled days are the bees knees and we’re all about finding the best places to have them. After letting you in on both Auckland and New Zealand’s most beautiful wedding venues, we thought it was time to dive into the quirkier spots. Sometimes rustic barns or urban chic venues just won’t do—you need something more unique to match you and your future person’s style.
To help you navigate New Zealand’s wedding venue sphere, we’ve rounded-up eight out-of-the-box New Zealand wedding venues. From water weddings and outdoor venues to rooftop spots and luxe locations, we hope you find the wedding venues of your dreams!
Nature lovers, this one is for you. What would you say if we told you that you could tie the knot in a living, breathing tree church. Yep, someone has created a church out of trees and it’s a slice of magic. Situated in Ohaupo (not too far from Cambridge, FYI), the Tree Church came to life by planting trees across a church-shaped iron frame and leaving Mother Nature to take over. The grounds also house a labyrinth and breathtaking gardens. Now that’s what we call out-of-the-box.
Love the water nearly as much as you love your forever person? Say ‘I do’ amongst the marine life at Kelly Tarltons. It might sound a bit wacky but these guys have what it takes to pull off an unforgettable ‘under the sea’ wedding complete with sharks, stingrays and thousands of deep sea creatures as your extra guests. Kelly Tarltons is also super close to the city and can seat up to 100 guests. Go on Ariel, we know you want to.
It’s one of the country’s most iconic and beautiful buildings and makes a stunning spot for a wedding. Yep, we’re talking the Auckland Museum. Choose between the domed event centre with jaw-dropping views of the city, or the marbled grand foyer, a space sure to take everyone’s breath anyway. You can have your wedding pics in front of the building and in all the pretty corners of the domain (the winter gardens would be a winner) before returning to have a cracker of a reception. The Auckland Museum is a top choice for those having a big, bold, beautiful wedding as it can fit upto 500 (!) people.
At A Campground
Kiwis and camping are a match made in heaven (just like you and your future hubby/wife) so it makes sense that we could pull off a truly awesome campsite wedding. There are hundreds of campground dotted all over the country, many of which would be glad to be part of your forever day. The tricky part? You’ll have to suss out everything, from the food and bevvies to the seating, music and all the other niggly bits. Campground weddings are the epitome of the DIY wedding but are 110% worth the effort. Our pick are Little River Campground, Piha Mill Camp and Hunua Falls Camp.
The Heritage Queenstown Rooftop
Yes, people! Rooftop weddings aren’t just for New York. The Heritage Queenstown’s rooftop will literally take your breath away. Add a wedding into the mix and you’ve pretty much got a fairytale. The rooftop terrace has Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables as its backdrop so you can’t really go wrong with that—it will make for some seriously stunning wedding snaps. There’s also plenty of room for a sit down reception (with views, of course) and their pro wedding team will make sure you day is smooth as can be.
In The Middle Of Nowhere
In The Middle Of Nowhere…
Why the heck not? Our country is a stunner and home to some truly magical spots so you might as well make the most of it and have one to yourself...at least for a day, anyway. The crew at Wildernest specialise in remote weddings, planning everything from finding the location and the reception to luxury glamping tents for you and all your guests to snooze in after celebrating love and having a compulsory hardcore sesh on the dancefloor.
On A Boat
Ahoy me hearties! Let your love set sail...literally. Hop on a boat and cruise off into the sunset surrounded by loved ones on one of New Zealand’s many boat charters. These boats vary in size and often work best for a smaller wedding (less than 50 people) but offer a seasational, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Not sure where to start? Raglan Boat Charters, The Wedding Company and Savoy are all tops.
