Auckland is taking things to a whole new level with the arrival of a floating theatre. Yes, folks, a floating theatre is now a thing—and it’s looking pretty epic, to say the least.
Putting a modern twist on traditional theatre, it merges together shadows, projections and our pretty New Zealand landscapes to showcase two very different but just as awesome viewing experiences.
Set amongst the Viaduct Marina and Whau River, this 30-seat floating cube gives off a magic lantern effect from the glowing lights and tent-like walls. This means you don’t have to be actually be on it to enjoy it—you are able to chill out and relax on land while still seeing the magical shadow movements of the performers. Saaaay what?!
And, if you’re lucky enough to nab a ticket for a seat inside the intimate cube, you’ll be treated to a part mime, part surrealist comedy extravaganza by two world-class performers.
But it doesn’t stop there! To top it all off, Jeff Henderson will be jumping on board to play some sweet sounds and will set the scenes to kick this baby off in true style. It all sounds a lil too good to be true but director and proud parent of The Floating Theatre Stephen Bain wanted to give the audience a fun, quirky experience by involving the viewers just as much as the actors. It was inspired by street culture in Europe with small pop-up shows appearing at totally random times. Well, it’s fair to say, this is random in all the best ways.
C’mon—it’s not every day you get to do something this groovy and quirky. Let's get into it!
