All The Best Spots To Discover In Ponsonby

Let’s be honest: we’re #blessed to call Auckland home. The city keeps the good times coming with mouth-watering restaurants, boutique shops, pampering spas and epic nightlife. Some suburbs go over and above, including the bustling precinct of Ponsonby.

To celebrate the city’s best ‘burbs, we’ve teamed up with the new Volvo XC40 to bring you guides to the city’s fave spots. The compact SUV is totally designed for Auckland life with all the lil (but important) touches. Think: cameras that give you a bird’s-eye view when you park, a boot that opens with the wave of a foot and storage for literally everything. Total car goals.

For the last leg of our urban adventure, we’ve rounded up our favourite spots in Ponsonby. And, ICYMI, click here for what’s good in Britomart and here for what’s good in Takapuna.

Devour The Blue Breeze Inn’s Signature Bao

You can’t call yourself an Aucklander until you’ve devoured The Blue Breeze Inn’s signature bao. Steamed to perfection, the fluffy bun is filled with crispy-yet-succulent pork belly, pickled cucumber and the all-important hoisin sauce. Bao aside, you’ll also find other Chinese eats with a unique island twist. We’re talkin’ dumplings, wontons, tiger prawns, noodles and an unmissable stir-fried cumin lamb. Save room for dessert because the famous lava choc pot is nothing short of epic.

Buy A New Wardrobe…

If you’re anything like us, chances are you’re dreaming of a new winter wardrobe. Thankfully, Ponsonby is your one-stop ‘burb for all things fashun. Brimming with designer stores, you’ll find the likes of Ruby, sass & bide, Juliette Hogan and Kate Sylvester. Marvel at the boutique collections and lust-worthy window displays as you reach for your purse. Trust us: you won’t be able to resist. How many colours does this coat come in?

… And Then Shop Some More!

Don’t put that purse away just yet—Ponsonby is so much more than fashion. Don’t just give your wardrobe a makeover, give your house a refresh thanks to the beautiful homeware stores. Fall in love with pieces from Shut The Front Door, Wallace Cotton and The Shelter. There’s also fab giftwares (Iko Iko and The Garden Party) and books (The Women’s Bookshop and Dorothy Butler Children’s Bookshop). Pop your shopping bags in the boot of the Volvo XC40— there are even hooks to hang ‘em!

Have A Pasta-Filled Long Lunch At Prego

First opening its doors 1986, it’s fair to say Prego has stood the test of time—and for good reason! The Italian restaurant serves up some of Auckland’s best pizza and pasta alongside an impressive wine list. What’s not to love?! We can’t go past the bianco pizza with Portobello mushrooms, ham, rocket and mozzarella—you’ll want the entire pizza to yourself. Our advice? Nab a seat in the outside courtyard and eat (and drink) the afternoon away. You’ll be forgiven when lunch turns into dinner.

Get Your Nails Done At Spring Spa

New kid on the block, Spring Spa is taking Auckland pampering to a whole new level. Based on the international concept of a social spa, the treatments are relaxing, fun and social. Pop in for a well-deserved massage and facial or get event-ready with tanning, brow and lash services. Spring Spa also has you covered from top to toe (literally) with their manicures and pedicures. Treat you and your bestie to matching nails—super cute!

Party Until The Wee Small Hours

If you find yourself in Ponsonby as day turns to night, stick around because the fun is just getting started. Keep an ear out for live bands and DJs at one of the local bars including Mr Toms, Chapel Bar & Bistro and Ponsonby Social Club. If you’re after an innovative cocktail or mocktail, check out the likes of Mea Culpa and Bedford Soda & Liquor. And, if you’re in the mood for a singalong, Vodka Room has two luxury karaoke rooms.

Finish Your Day With The Dairy’s Ice-Cream Sandwiches!

Ice-cream sandwiches are back and better than ever. For a delicious dose of childhood nostalgia head to The Dairy in Ponsonby Central. Their Melt Bar pairs freshly baked cookies with Kapiti ice-cream. You’re the master of your creation with countless combinations on offer. The cookies come in flavours such as peanut butter, ginger and red velvet, while the ice-cream cabinet stars black doris plum, affogato and spice apple crumble. The hardest part is deciding!

Ponsonby, you’re one of the hippest strips in town. Explore the happening ‘burb in Volvo’s new XC40. Designed for city life, it’s the perfect urban explorer!
