Auckland, A ‘Blood Moon’ Is About To Happen And It’s A Pretty Big Deal

Guys, it’s time to up your Insta game. ICYMI, the longest total lunar eclipse of the century is about to hit our winter night sky so things are about to get cooked in the celestials.

And what’s so special about this fancy, schmancy phase of the moon? Well firstly, us Auckland legends will actually be able to catch the full lunar eclipse on Saturday 28 July albeit at around 7:30 am. So yes, this is a not-so-subtle hint to check

Secondly, if ‘blood moon’ hasn’t already implied it, should you be as committed as us and actually wake up at such an ungodly hour, you’ll be looking at a deep-red moon of sorts (all thanks to the laws of refraction #science). This is thanks to the moon passing directly into the darkest region of the earth’s shadow, which makes it look red.

Finally, the eclipse will last around 103 glorious minutes and FYI, there won’t be another one until the 2100s. Astronomers predict that a partial eclipse will then follow for almost four hours.

The Deets:

What: The longest eclipse of the century, with a blood red moon

When: July 28 7.30am
