Calling all art enthusiasts! Auckland is in for a summer like never before. A myriad of brightly coloured dots will soon obliterate a pure white room nestled inside the Auckland Art Gallery. An idea this radical could only mean one thing—avant-garde Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama is welcoming Kiwi shores (!!).
For those of you unfamiliar with Kusama’s work, here’s the down low.
She is without a doubt the definition of fabulosity. Mhmm, she’s stolen our hearts! Bright, cheerful and eccentric in the best of ways, she is believed to have influenced contemporaries such as Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg—not to mention her iconic collaboration with Louis Vuitton in 2012 as well as being named one fo the World's 100 Most Influential People in TIME Magazine. Her colourful work encapsulates pop art, minimalism and the feminist art movements. Meanwhile, we’re sitting back, dipping chocolate into our tea and filling in our adult colouring book. Each to their own, right?
Kicking off with a festive spirit on December 9th, the white walls, ceiling and furniture in the space will over time be completely and utterly obliterated with iconic colourful dots. The idea relates to hallucinations Kusama experienced in childhood, where her vision was clouded by spots. Hence why the idea welcomes people of all ages to grab a dot and engage with the room in an entirely self-directed way. It’s creativity at its finest—you don’t even have to stay within the lines!
It’s unlikely that you needed any convincing, but we thought we’d mention that entry is free, too. Having the chance to see one of the world’s most talented artists for zilch almost feels wrong? But hey, it’s not like us Aucklanders to bypass a freebie. So, to compliment that perfect summer's day, grab yourself an iced macchiato from the adjacent cafe and head to the Art Gallery to become a part of Kusama’s history.
