BBQ-style food holds a special place in our hearts here at The Urban List. It’s allllll about the meat AND it’s slathered in the sauce of the gods…. Need we say more?
Auckland seems to have jumped on board the Southern train with a slew of mouth-watering, tummy-rumbling, finger-lick’n restaurants popping up left, right and centre. So we’ve put together a list of Auckland’s best BBQ restaurants for all the carnivores out there. Chuck your best pair of fat pants on and get in there, ya’ll!
Named after the New Orleans hit song “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” this Southern-style restaurant is all about the soul food. All of their dishes pack a huge punch, with big southern flavours. You’ll find stuff like Jambalaya, Ya Ya Gumbo, blackened market fish and of course, braised beef short ribs. They also specialise in Po Boys— which are meat sandwiches, served in a baguette style, New Orleans French bread…So, basically a gift from the gods.
Eat your heart out at Miss Moonshine’s. These guys know where it’s at when it comes to BBQ food. Slow-cooked, wood-smoked and full of flavour is what you can expect from this restaurant. They’ve got street style dishes like beef brisket, pork belly ribs, smoked salmon and leg of lamb— all smoked in the pit with Pohutakawa. Taking American-style grill and enhancing it with New Zealand freshness is the name of the game at Miss Moonshines!
This trendy little spot is a BBQ restaurant and live music venue all in one, and being there makes you feel like you’ve been transported from Auckland, straight to the town of New Orleans itself. For an Auckland-based restaurant, it’s pretty damn authentic, and you can find stuff like fried chicken and waffles, pork po boys and prawn stuffed flatfish. For a seriously tasty time, Orleans is the place to visit.
For a “Damn good BBQ,” head over to Morepork BBQ on Jervois road. This restaurant knows a thing or two about BBQ food—they’re home to NZ’s first custom built smoker. It’s owned by head chef Clint Davies and has a mouth-watering menu featuring dishes like the smoked meat combos, with three choices of smoked meat, one side roll and pickled veggies. They’ve even got “fixin’s,” like devilled eggs, tater tots and corn bread. We’ll take one of each, please!
El Sizzling Chorizo
El Sizzling Chorizo restaurant is in Ponsonby and brings a taste of Argentinian BBQ culture to Auckland with their “asado” (barbeque) style. They believe that meat should be enjoyed with a drink and the good company of friends, and you can find all the typical BBQ dishes served up with Chimichurri! So gather your crew and stuff your faces together at El Sizzling Chorizo.
Brothers Juke Joint
Brothers Juke Joint is a brewery and BBQ restaurant all in one. Take your hubby here and you’ll get allll the brownie points! They’ve got naked meats and meat sandwiches AND a whole menu full of different types of sauces to slather on top of your meal. Top it all off with some hot sides, like tater tots, burnt end beans and macaroni and cheese and you’ve got yourself a meal fit for a King…. Or Queen!
You’ll find Fireworks Smokehouse on Jelicoe Street, in downtown’s North Wharf, with all the options you’d expect to see when dining at a restaurant called “Fireworks Smokehouse.” They’ve got smoked brisket chilli con carne, beef cheeks and brisket and sides to get any tummy rumbling. Think mash chicken gravy, Meme’s potato salad and pickled jalapenos! Yeeeeeeees please!
