I scream. You scream. We all scream for…… Katsu!
We’re talkin’ about chicken on rice with sauce. A simple but delicious dish the Japanese call Chicken Katsu. We call it genius! And for some reason people just go nuts for it! There really aren’t too many variations on it. Aside from the ol’ brown rice/white rice conundrum. Or whether or not you’re all about slathering that Japanese mayo on top or deathly against it (because there’s no in-between)
But no matter how you like it, I think we can all agree that it’s the bomb diggity! So, without further ado, we’ve rounded up the best places to get a good Chicken Katsu in Auckland. Our tummies are rumbling already….. bring on lunchtime!
Ahhhh Renkon. It’s the boss dog of Japanese food. Their dishes are as beautiful looking as they are tasty. You can choose to dine in or if you’re in a rush you can get your meal to go in an authentic Japanese noodle box. This is probs the number 1 pick amongst Katsu lovers!
This little gem is tucked away on the Ponsonby end of Jervois Road and if you didn’t frequent it every day like us here at The Urban List, you probably wouldn’t even know it’s there. Our favourite? The Chicken Katsu Don on brown rice. Hold the mayo!

Voted best sushi by Metro and Viva, Bian sushi is def worth checking out! With lines out the door, this is a lunch time fav for many. And we’ve heard their Chicken Katsu Curry is to die for!

Probs the most instagrammable sushi out. & Sushi is almost too good to eat…… almost. What sets them apart from the rest is their attention to detail, making every piece of sushi look mouth wateringly good. And they’re super healthy. Give their Chicken Katsu Don a whirl— it’s free range too!
A favourite among inner city dwellers for a dine in lunch or dinner. The Don is tucked away in Canterbury Arcade and is BYO— so get the wine ready! We’ve heard the bento boxes are super delicious and of course, don’t forget to check out their katsu!
Another front runner on our list. If you haven’t yet checked out Wagamama, you’re toats missing out! Sitting more in the restaurant category, their menu is brimming with so many tasty options. And for you Japanese loving parents out there, they’ve got a special kids menu with mini meals like our fav— Chicken Katsu!
Industry Zen is def worth a visit if not just for the food but for the awesome presentation. They really go above and beyond to create an authentic and hip atmosphere for all you Japanese food loving folk and they do an awesome traditional chicken katsu on a hot plate!
Katsubi is a modernised version of a Japanese restaurant lets you concoct your own dishes. First you select your bowl size, brown or white rice, a selection of veggies and salads, then you get 2 choices of meat and finish it off with your sauces. A great way to pimp out your katsu!
Achos started off as a food truck and have since moved their delicious cuisine to a shop in the funky St Kevins arcade! Specialising in Japanese tapas, so you can sample a bunch of items from their menu, perfect for sharing and they’ve got our beloved Chicken Katsu in a bun! Yummm.
Cooked in both contemporary and traditional style, Genta is our last yummo Japanese place to visit for a damn good Chicken Katsu. They even offer BYO during the week for a cheapy $6 corkage fee. Get in there!
