Remember when you were a kid and Mum would come home from the supermarket with a pack of those bright pink ice cream wafers? She’d carefully cut out a rectangle of vanilla ice cream and volia—you’d have yourself an ice cream sandwich.
Boy, do we have some good news for you: ice cream sammies back and better than ever.
Those flavourless wafers (bless them) have been replaced with cookies and stuffed with the likes of ganache, candy floss, sauce and, of course, ice cream.
Here’s where to get your cookie sammie fix in this mighty fine city of ours.
Newmarket & Takapuna
After you’ve polished off one of Burger Burger’s mouth-watering burger creations, cast your eye over their equally mouth-watering dessert menu. Their ice cream sammie stars two house-made cookies (think choc chip, coconut, white choc macadamia or choc hazelnut) and Kohu Road ice cream. The salted caramel flavour is particularly divine.
Whoopi is the the master of sweet treats so it’s no surprise they’re on the cookie sammie bandwagon. Their sandwich features two brownie cookies that are slightly crunchy on the outside and perfectly soft and gooey on the inside. They’ve replaced the traditional ice cream filling in favour of Whittaker’s milk chocolate ganache or sweet salty peanut butter buttercream (um…yum!). They then hand-dip the sammie in chocolate for good measure.
Nestled away in Ponsonby Central, The Dairy has a strong cookie sandwich game. You’re the master of your creation with a seemingly endless selection of cookies and ice cream. Their cookies star peanut butter, choc sea salt, red velvet and M&Ms. And, as for the ice cream, you’ve got the likes of black doris plum, affogato, spiced apple crumble and triple chocolate. What’s more, you can add candy floss to your sammie.
House Of Chocolate Dessert Café
If you’ve got a sweet tooth on ya, it’s about time you checked out House Of Chocolate Dessert Café. Their menu stars all things chocolate, including none other than a cookie sandwich. You’ll be served two chocolate chip cookies sandwiching a scoop of Kohu Road ice cream. Because there’s no such thing as too much chocolate, it’s then drizzled with chocolate ganache and garnished with a chocolate scroll.
There’s no better way to polish off a serve of Miss Clawdy’s finger-lickin’ fried chicken than with an ice cream sandwich. This bad boy changes flavours on the regular but we promise it will be delish—especially their super-thick cookies! For a walk down memory lane, this dessert is paired with a glass of cold milk—served in a petite milk jar with a paper straw, nonetheless.
