Call us Christopher Columbus because we’ve only gone and discovered a new type of tooth! Yes, dentists may have taught us about mouths’ full of molars, canines and everything in between, yet they failed to enlighten us all on the sweet variety which fill our chops. If you’ve been following The Urban List for awhile, you know we are hopelessly devoted to all things dessert. So much so, we are surprised you can’t hear our sweet teeth cheering and clapping in the distance.

Long gone are the days where we have to finish everything on our dinner plate in order to gorge on pud. Now we can simply skip this stage altogether and go straight into a sugar-glazed euphoria! With so many designated dessert cafes in our candy-coated city, we urge you to put on those stretchy pants, keep that taxi on speed dial and get ready to become the Bruce Bogtrotter you were destined to be.

Oko Dessert Kitchen

CBD

If you thought that works of art could only be created by the likes of Picasso and Van Gogh, think again, buddy! The talented team at Oko Dessert Kitchen create visually stunning and edible masterpieces. Residing in Auckland’s very own Aotea Square and boasting a bountiful cabinet of exquisite, individual, sugar-infused morsels, visitors will never ever be disappointed with their choice. If you thought they were your only options, get ready for a new lot of ‘woah’s!’ All we are gonna say is you HAVE to get their signature volcano from the chef’s menu.

Milse

Britomart

If you’re feeling super duper indulgent and oh-so la di da, forget ordering the second cheapest wine on the menu and instead put that hard-earned money to a better, more delicious use. Tucked away down a tiny, dimly lit alley in Central Auckland’s Britomart lies the small yet delectable dessert destination of Milse. Upon entry to this intimate setting, be greeted with glass cabinets of intricate and delicate macarons and chocolates that boast some of the most interesting and incredible flavour combinations. Take a seat to discover the delights of the a la carte and degustation menu, featuring the likes of the matcha green tea, apple, ginger and choux dish. Just one spoon, please!

Casa Del Gelato

Parnell

You will have probably seen their momentous shakes and desserts filling your Insta feeds with whipped cream in tow. The team at Casa Del Gelato Parnell, certainly don’t do small portions or skimp on all things sugar-coated and we couldn’t be more thankful! Located down a cobbled street off Parnell Road, grab a seat and get ready to gorge. With a pretty-as-a-picture outdoor courtyard and walls adorned in flower vines and pastel colours, your freakshake or dessert couldn’t have a more perfect backdrop if it tried. Order in the crunch tower, complete with perfectly balanced profiteroles and marshmallows and get set to wear your whipped cream moustache with pride!

House Of Chocolate Dessert Cafe

Takapuna

Auckland peeps you’ll want to be on the north side of the bridge for this one! Serving up some of the most scrumptious desserts, cakes and chocolates in Auckland, House Of Chocolate Dessert Cafe has certainly got our attention. As the name suggests, expect to find lashings and lashings of chocolate a’plenty, cocoa-infused cakes and individual and perfectly glossy choccies to take home for later. With that ‘just like home’ warming atmosphere, grab yourself a mocha (cause, why not?!) and a slice of their infamous gorgeously gooey Belgium chocolate cake and settle down for the afternoon.

Miann

Fort St & Britomart

As if one teeth-achingly sweet Miann store wasn’t enough for us Aucklanders, they’ve gone and created a second for all of our cravings and desires. With both a Fort Street and a Britomart location to choose from, getting your sugar fix couldn’t be easier. Both boasting an eye-catching cabinet full of macarons and bon bons, we simply can’t look past the sea salted caramel, pecan chocolate brownie or mint and Milo varieties! At the Fort Street flagship, expect to indulge in an extensive menu focused on delicate pastries and petit gateaux or, nab a seat in Takutai Square at the Britomart store and have trouble choosing just one of the eight hot chocolates on offer!

Moustache

Karangahape Road

Located on the ever bustling K ‘Road, away from the op shops and shish bars, you’ll find the fairly recent residence of the Food Workshop. With large, yellow neon lights producing the word ‘Moustache’, you know you’ve stumbled into the right place. Set amongst an Argentinian grill and a popcorn shop, Auckland’s best and only cookie bar takes its spot. Moustache have been serving up their tasty morsels to sweet-toothed Jafa’s for a long time and, now with a permanent place to call home, punters can pull up a pew, order in a freshly baked cookie and coffee and watch the masters craft these delicious bites in the open, on-site kitchen.

Giapo

Gore Street

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Okay, now we’ve gotten that out of our system, let’s get stuck into the matter in hand—Giapo. No longer residing on Queen St, the team have decided to move into a bigger and better location on Gore St, which just means even more room for delish ice-cream, right?! Completely standing out from the crowd with their blind date-style of service, buyers don’t actually get to see their choice until the big reveal at the end. Relying on preferences and small tasters, the final result is a surprise and a stellar one at that! With culinary ice-cream genius Gianpaolo behind the scenes, expect flavours to be bold, unique and always ahead of the game!

Chocolate Boutique Cafe

Parnell

This renowned Parnell institution looks like your regular quaint and cute-as-a-button Kiwi villa, but upon closer inspection and with mouth a’dribbling, you’ll discover the Chocolate Boutique Cafe. The smell alone is enough to tempt you inside and trust us, you won’t regret straying off your path. With an emphasis on—you guessed it—chocolate, expect to find more than 200 New Zealand varieties of the stuff amongst gift hampers, baskets and a cafe menu fit for Willy Wonka. Don’t worry if you can’t decide, simply order one or three things and use your indecisiveness as a good excuse to visit the weekend after!

Patisserie Vaniye

Parnell

If sweet-smelling, freshly-baked pastries aren’t enough to wake you from your walk to work slumber, we don’t know what will! Behind glass doors and home to all your pastry and sweet treat needs is Parnell’s very own Parisian-inspired, Patisserie Vaniye. Mastering the classics such as the eclair, millefeuille and all-butter croissant, we can already feel our jeans tightening. Oh, and we aren’t done yet! With a cabinet stocked with impeccably presented macarons, friands and petits fours, sweet treats have never looked better!
