We’re big fans of things from under the sea. Whether it’s a crispy fillet of fish, salty oysters or moreish calamari rings, Auckland is home to some seriously good seafood.

To help you fulfil your kaimoana cravings, we’ve reeled in the best seafood restaurants in Auckland. And trust us, they’re a catch.

Fish Fish

Ponsonby & Takapuna

Just in case the name didn’t tip you off, Fish Fish do seafood and they do it well. With locations in both Ponsonby and Takapuna, you can get your fish fix from either side of the bridge. Sink your teeth into the fish taco, go for a bit of fresh zing with the ceviche, or warm up with a bowl of chowder. Fish Fish also does Sawmill Pilsner Beer battered, panko crumbed or pan-fried fresh fish—grab them with a side of kumara chips and lemon mayo, and you’ve got yourself a primo feed.

IKA

Mt Eden

The crew at this Mt Eden seafood bar and grill are pros at what they do. Expect an array of tasty, affordable dishes including fried calamari, slow cooked baby octopus and steamed green-lipped mussels. IKA has a strong Kokoda game (Fijian raw fish salad) and their Mozambican seafood stew is chocka with fish, prawns, squid and clams is the goods.

FISH

Auckland City

Seafood and sea views go hand in hand, and that’s exactly what you’ll get from an evening at FISH. The recently renovation saw the restaurant take the décor and menu to the next level, and it won’t disappoint. Chef Gareth Stewart and Head Chef Fraser Shelton serve up mouth-watering, seasonal dishes—crayfish ‘grenobloise’, roast monkish, their famous Cloudy Bay clam chowder and Paua dumplings (dumplings!). Yes.

Harbourside

Auckland City

Grab a pozzy on Harbouside’s sun-drenched deck and feast on their extensive seafood menu. The ocean bar and grill features a menu of raw fish, smoked snapper pate, crispy skin gurnard, seared scallops and scampi, West Coast whitebait fritters, hapuka curry…the list goes on and on. Harbourside’s epic seafood platter is worthy of a mention—it’s full to the brim with freshly shucked oysters, sashimi, clams, prawns, squid and so much more.

The Crab Shack

Princes Wharf

Put on your bib and roll up your sleeves because things are about to get messy. The Crab Shack are huge advocates for cracking, crushing and slurping up your seafood, so prepare to get stuck in. Their crab pots are a must and we’ve got a soft spot for the crab mac’n’cheese—it’s dotted with soft crab meat, capers, herbs and aged cheddar. Mmm, mmm.

Ostro

Britomart

For the ultimate treat, head to the Auckland-famous Ostro in Britomart. This restaurant is the brainchild of Josh Emett and home to some of the best seafood in the city. The kingfish crudo and tuna tartare are to die for, as is the seafood platter. You’ll want to save plenty of room for the seared Akaroa salmon with sautéed potatoes, bisque, shaved fennel and capers—it’s a knock out.

Sails Restaurant

Westhaven Drive

Only the freshest of seafood makes it into Sails Restaurant. This snazzy spot comes with sweeping views of Westhaven Marina and has been delivering exceptional seafood fare for more than three decades. We’re suckers for the twelve fresh oysters with the likes of nam jim, Chardonnay vinegar and crispy batter as well as the yellow fin tuna, spiced calamari and John Dory with green risotto and spanner crab. Sails is perfect for an anniversary dins or a fan-cy dinner with the fam.

Euro

Auckland City

An evening at Euro is a must for every Aucklander. The place has been in action since 1999 and has been through a series of revamps, getting better and better every time. Today, you’ll find the likes of confit salmon, saffron prawn linguine and line-caught trevally, enjoyed with a glass of bubbly or two. And, Euro will even keep your seafood-free friends happy with pekin duck leg and a moreish Wakanui scoth fillet. What a gem.
