There’s no need to fork out out your pennies on a plane ticket to Rio! That’s right, folks. Mardi Gras is coming to Auckland!
On December 1, K Road will be taken over by samba dancers, steel drums and street food—yeow! Dig out your most colourful clothes and cover yourself in feathers as this event promises to be one mega partaaay!
From 6pm to 9pm, K Road will be pumpin’—Mardi Gras-style! The aptly named event, Carnival, is part of the much-loved late-night art event, First Thursdays.
There will be no shortage of music! The Brazilian Divas samba dancers will be sashaying their way up and down the street to live music, while Southern Star Steel Band’s will be pumpin’ Caribbean and calypso-inspired tunes from the west end of K Road.
Meanwhile, Beresford Square will be taken over by Soul Samba Circus and their 12-piece collective—complete with pounding Brazilian drums! The K Road overbridge will star Coconut Grove who will be performing music and dance reflective of the vibrant Pacific culture that once dominated the street.
Mardi Gras-esque activities will keep you entertained with Viva Dance Studios hosting salsa classes, a photo booth for you to snap a selfie, handmade and vintage markets, and—the best part—street food!
If you don’t have a mask to wear to the event, fear not! You can get your arts and crafts on at the head crown and mask making stall. And remember, when it comes to making your mask, there’s no such thing as too much glitter—or feathers, for that matter!
Local businesses will also be in party-mode. Revel Café will be shaking up $10 carnival-themed cocktails, while Madame George promises street food and delish cocktails.
So, what are you waiting for? Shake on down to K Road and get amongst Carnival!
