Auckland's Most Beautiful Spots

We’re sure you’re all aware by now that we here at The Urban List hold this city close to our hearts. And with so many awesome things to see and do we really are spoilt for choice.

But as well as all of the top-notch establishments there are to visit, Auckland also has so many breathtakingly beautiful places to see. So, if you’re feeling like a break from the rat race, just jump in your car and within half an hour in any direction you’ve arrived at a beautiful spot.

Call us biased—we don’t care! But Tāmaki Makaurau, you really are the most beautiful city in the world and we are just so lucky to call this city our home.

So we're sending you off on a ride to visit some of Auckland most beautiful spots. Just remember to be a tidy Kiwi and keep NZ green!

Kumeu Wine Country

Kumeu

Looking for the perfect way to spend a hot summer's day? Then take out drive out to Kumeu Wine Country. Just a short trip from the end of the North Western Motorway, you’ll find the beautiful semi-rural suburb of Kumeu. Choose to take a guided half or full-day wine tour, visiting more than one of the wineries Kumeu has to offer. Or, park yourself up at one for the day and relax amongst the vines while you sip on some vino and have a bite to eat.

Goldie’s Bush Walk

Muriwai

Heading out a little further North West of the city and you’ll end up in Muriwai, where you’ll find the tranquil Goldie’s bush walk. This is an absolute must-do for all you outdoorsy folk. There are two options: the walking track, which is a fairly easy going walk and doesn’t require too much skill, or the tramping track for the more advanced hikers. This is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and become one with nature. The soothing sounds of the forest and the beautiful green foliage make this a top pick of ours for Auckland’s most beautiful spots.

Mount Eden

Mt Eden

Nestled in the heart of Mt Eden Village, this beautiful spot doesn’t require much travel from the city at all. The volcanic peak is a fave among hikers, joggers and sight seers. The winding roads— closed to vehicles—make this the perfect place to get in that cardio while enjoying the breath-taking 360-degree views Auckland city has to offer. And, if you feel like veering off-the-beaten track a little, then kick off those shoes, feel the grass between your toes and pick a tree to lay under. You might even get a visit from a friendly little tui bird. There truly is something magical about Mount Eden.

Maraetai Beach

Maraetai

Bike trails, beaches and cafes are some of the treasures this eastern suburb has to offer. Tiny white shells scatter the beach and Pohutakawa trees line the cycle paths for the kiddos to ride their bikes in the sun. The cycle path stretches out six kilometres from Maraetai to Beachlands and takes around 90 mins one-way to walk. Along the way, the kids can stop and play on the playground while the adults enjoy a coffee or a vino at one of the local cafes, making this the perfect family day out.

Shakespear Regional Park

Whangaparoa

Shakespear Regional Park sits north of Auckland in Whangaparoa and is a top contender on our list of Auckland’s most beautiful spots. The park has three beautiful beaches within its grounds as well camping sites, bookable sites for functions such as weddings, BBQ areas, boat ramps and native bush areas. There’s Waterfall Gully which takes you to a cascading waterfall and Kowhai Glen which has the Tiri Tiri track made for hiking. But, possibly the best part about Shakespear Park is being able to share the grounds with many different bird species such as the bright blue peacocks strutting around and the brightly coloured rosellas. This beautiful spot is definitely worth the drive, just don’t get too close to the peacocks— they bite.

Otauatua Stonefields

Mangere

This historic reserve is possibly one of Auckland’s best kept secrets. Otauatua Stonefields is one of New Zealands oldest Māori settlements and home to one of Auckland’s largest scale stone work— where you can pick avocado’s….. for FREE! But be sure to treat this site with the upmost respect for the sake of its history and residents. And, don’t go too wild on the avocado picking, the Auckland council has set a five per person limit. The southern side of the reserve also links directly to the coastline, creating a pretty spectacular view with a beautiful beachfront. It’s the perfect spot for a splash and a post-swim picnic with the family.

Anawhata Track

Waitakere Ranges

Anawhata Beach is a hidden gem within West Auckland which can only be reached by a 30-minute walking track. The beach is considered not safe enough to swim as its more of a surf beach. But don’t let this deter you as this is one magnificent spot. Little blue penguins can be found nesting along the coastline and the hike through the bush to get the beach is so serene. The walking track is known to be quite steep at times so a moderate level of fitness is required to visit this beautiful spot.

Auckland Domain Wintergardens

Auckland CBD

Another gem right in the heart of the city centre is the Winter Gardens. Nestled in the Auckland Domain is an oasis of rare and spectacular plants in two large green-houses. One green-house is home to temperature plants and the other to tropical plants. The complex is open year round and is free admission.

Muriwai Beach Gannet Colony

Muriwai

Another spot on our beautiful west coast is the Muriwai beach gannet colony. Chuck on your walking shoes and take a stroll up the hill onto the gannet colony trail to watch around 1,500 pairs of gannets in their natural habitat as they nest here from August to March every year. It’s a little loud and windy but a beautiful view nonetheless, of Muriwai Beach and Māori Bay which are both fantastic surf beaches and home to many visitors over the summer. Grab an ice cream on your way back down and let the kids loose on the playground to tucker the kids out before you leave.

Westhaven Marina

Auckland CBD

Our final pick for Auckland’s most beautiful spots is Westhaven Marina. This is the perfect spot to park up with your lover while the sun is setting over the Harbour Bridge and dream up your fantasy life, while picking out your favourite yachts parked up in the marina. Or, swing by during the day to watch those gutsy people plummet off the Harbour Bridge for the infamous Harbour Bridge bungy jump!
