Burgers and Aucklanders are so bound together that they’re pretty much a marriage—and a happy one at that. And while it may sometimes feel like there’s so many burger joints around town that surely we can’t fit in any more, along comes another one and we realise that yes, Auckland-town just can’t have too many burgers.
The latest newcomer is brought to you by the same people who own the Onehunga Café and Corner Burger on Greenwoods Corner—we recently wrote about that store here—but be assured that their Mt Eden venture ups the ante on the burger stakes.
Located on the corner of Mt Eden and Valley Roads, it has transformed the site which for years has come and gone in various guises such as a dairy and a restaurant. Also once a petrol station, the courtyard area is now filled with spacious wooden seats, hanging plants and heaters—you’ll want to park your booty here summer and winter.
Inside, the chefs work in an open kitchen with a bar opposite it. It’s a great concept—grab a $5 ‘wait’ beer while your burgers cook. But, if you want to sit down there is enough seating for around 100 people, including high stools, booths and tables. Something for everyone, really.
We visited the joint on its opening night and there were already lots of customers and a great, community vibe. And this is exactly what owner Charles Belcher wanted.
‘We are a local brand and want to be part of the fabric of the community,’ he explains.
We went back a few days later when things were a little less hectic to have a chat to Charles. He’d had his eye on the site for some time and his absolute passion for burgers is obvious.
‘They are the only socially acceptable meal where you can pick them up with your hands and eat them,’ he says. ‘Eating a burger engages all your senses.’
And the burgers on this menu are out-of-this-world good. These are crafted burgers with slow cooked brisket and hand-pressed patties. Building up their ‘Corner Icons’ menu includes That Burger—double beef patty, Swiss cheese, American cheddar, streaky bacon, iceberg, tomato, crispy onion ring, dill pickles, truffle mascarpone, wholegrain mustard, aioli, tomato relish topped with ketchup and a special sauce. See what we mean by out of this world?
Their icon list also includes the Cheat Meal, the Winner Winner and Sticky Fingers. There are other classic burgers available too, as well as the Naked Burger (pictured) which is missing its buns.
If you’re a bit of a picky eater or like your burgers ‘just so’ then you’ll love the option to make your own burger.
Side options include hand cut agria or kumara fries, fried chicken, slaw and pickle.
In the bar you’ll find a selection of craft beer, a small wine list and a small selection of cocktails—including the Mt Eden Mule. Sodas are from the Soda Press Company, which is fast growing in popularity as a heathier alternative to traditional fizzy drinks because the syrups are handcrafted from natural ingredients.
You can be assured that these gourmet burgers are the shizzle and we’re predicting Mt Eden’s Corner Burger will quickly become a go-to for the locals and a popular spot for those who need to drive to get there. What a reward after you’ve climbed the mountain!
