There’s no dessert more unique to New Zealand than ya classic Kiwi pavlova—hands off, Australia! While it’s been awhile since our dear friend Anna Pavlova balleted her way around the country, her legacy lives on through the meringue-based dessert. Delightfully crispy on the outside with a light, fluffy inside, this dessert is tricky for the home cook to master. Thankfully, some of Auckland’s top chefs are doing the hard work for you—and in exceptional style. Here’s where to find the fanciest pavs in Auckland.
No visit to Cibo is complete without ordering their signature pavlova. Listed under the aptly named ‘Cibo’s famous pavlova’ section of the menu, you’ll find not one but TWO pav offerings. Choose between their take on Louise cake or opt for their salted caramel number—topped high with toffee peanut brittle and chocolate dust. While these pavs are all sorts of delish, we suggest you share it with one or two others—they’re huge! They change up their topping on the regular so make sure you visit, err, on the regular.
True Food & Yoga
For a healthy take on the Kiwi dessert, nip into True Food & Yoga to try their matcha (yes, matcha) pavlova. This unique dessert is served with fresh passionfruit and coconut custard—yum! The addition of matcha means the dessert is packed with antioxidants, making your decision to order dessert totally justifiable. You can also rest easy knowing this dessert is gluten, dairy and nut-free—and still super tasty!
New kid on the block Kindred hasn’t been around for long, but they’ve already mastered the pavlova. Designed to be shared between two, the perfectly cooked meringue is topped with poached rhubarb before being drizzled with passionfruit and garnished with cacao nibs. We can see ourselves becoming regulars at the Wynyard Quarter restaurant for this dessert alone—it’s heaven on a plate.
Soak in a bird’s-eye view of the city as you dig into your pav at SkyTower’s Orbit. Located 190-metres over the city, this unique restaurant rotates once every hour—meaning you literally have 360-degree views of the city. View aside, the food is equally incredible—especially their vanilla pavlova. The cute-as-a-button pavlova is served with elderflower cream (yum) and strawberry soup (double yum!). It also comes with a dollop of vanilla ice cream for good measure.
Overlooking the Waitemata Harbour, Mikano is another restaurant that boosts a decent view…and a decent pavlova! Their pav is less on the crispy side and more of the soft, creamy side. It’s served on a bed of passionfruit sauce and topped with kiwifruit. The oh-so-Kiwi dessert will have you reminiscing on Christmas Day feasts. It’s a big call, but we reckon this pav is even better than your Aunty’s! Dig in.
For a Japanese twist on the Kiwi pav, check out Skycity’s Masu. This unique dessert is flavoured with white miso and served looking like a mini cloud (cute!). It also stars textures of tamarillo and dates and a scoop of guava chilli sorbet. There’s nothing bland about this bad boy—your taste buds are in for a treat! The rest of the dessert menu is equally delish. And, if you can decide what to order, you’ll be pleased to know they have a dessert platter. Dreams do come true.
