Fortunately for you, this fine city is home to a rather large handful of stellar bars, the best of which are listed below (you’re welcome!). From grungy wine dens to sundrenched rooftops, cocktail joints and craft brew bars, here is your new go-to guide of best bars in Auckland. How many have you ticked off?

  1. Mea Culpa: The home of immaculately constructed (and damn tasty) cocktails. Ponsonby’s Mea Culpa (Latin for ‘my fault’) will serve up the prettiest drink you’ve ever slurped. 
  2. Harry: Named after Harry, the owner’s dog/bouncer, this Ponsonby gem is a cracker of an Auckland bar with friendly peeps and Sunday karaoke a.k.a. Harry-Oke nights. 
  3. Everybody’s: Everybody loves Everybody’s. From a courtyard, mezzanine and a mega couch, you’ll find somewhere to perfect place to perch your tush and drink the night away.

  7. Swashbucklers: An oldie but a goodie. You can’t beat a Swashies drinking sesh on a sunny day. 
  8. Xuxu: Dumplings? Check. Cocktails? Check. A courtyard to enjoy them? They’ve got it. Britomart’s Xuxu is a genuine gem of an Auckland bar.  
  9.  Racket: Tucked down Roukai Lane, Racket cranks out the Cuban vibes off Customs Street with cocktails (Extinguished Gentlemen is tops), a late night food menu—swine in a bun, fried chicken, and curly fries, gravy and cheese—and more than 85 premium rums. 
  10. Freida Margolis: A charming Grey Lynn local packed with personality and punches. We’re talking vodka, vermouth and pomegranate, as well as an excellent cocktail list.

  13. The Britomart Country Club: A much-loved bar in the heart of Auckland city. BCC’s massive courtyard is where you want to be for after work dranks and noms.  
  14. The Gin Room: Bask in botanicals and 1920s feels at this Vulcan Lane bar. It crafts some of the best cocktails in Auckland.
  15. Housebar: After undergoing a few refurbs, Housebar in Hotel DeBrett has been restored to its former glory. Housebar is hidden from the bustling streets of the CBD, but its relaxed, speakeasy atmosphere, classic cocktails, and eclectic mix of people makes it one of the best bars in Auckland. 
  16. Pineapple on Parnell: Behind a dark door marked only with its namesake fruit, you’ll find one of Auckland’s best kept secrets. The cocktails here, like the décor, are decadent and truly one of a kind.
  17. The Lula Inn: Good times are aplenty at The Lula Inn. The extensive drinks menu showcases 39 (yes, 39!) types of gin as well as cocktails inspired by the Pacific. Visit from Thursday to Sunday for live music guaranteed to get you dancing. 
  18. Bellini: The beloved Bellini has been a hit with Auckland’s cocktail connoisseurs for yonks, and they’ve recently treated them to a new look and feel. With stunning harbour views, it’s no doubt one of the best bars in Auckland. 
  19. 46 & York: A classy yet casual watering hole in Parnell, 46 & York is the kinda place you could easily waste an afternoon. Their cocktails are among the best in Auckland. Oh, and good luck with resisting the food menu—the mac n’ cheese is to die for. 
  20. La Zeppa: La Zeppa is an Auckland favourite, and with a ginormous sun-drenched outdoor deck (complete with lanterns for when the sun goes down), open fireplace, and a tapas-style menu, it’s the ultimate bar for drinks with the crew. 
  21. The Wine Cellar: Descend the steps of St Kevin’s Arcade and you might just stumble upon one of K Road’s hidden treasures, The Wine Cellar. They stock a select number of bevvies, and have everything you want from a small, underground bar. Or wander up the road to Red Bar on Pitt St where mixology mastermind, Laura Lopez creates some of the best cocktail combos in town.
  22. Bellota: Seriously good Spanish cocktails and tapas makes this Federal Street spot one of the best in the city. 
  23. The Corner: This neighbourhood tapas and wine bar in Howick is a hit with the locals, and with a bunch of weekly specials, a buzzing atmosphere, and brilliant service, we don’t blame them. 
  24. 1885: Before it turns in to one of the city's most happening nightlife hotspots at the stroke of midnight, 1885 is the place to be to enjoy your favourite top-shelf bevvies. Killer cocktails, champagne, wines galore—you name it, it's here!
  25. Flight 605: This quirky gem of a bar is Morningside’s best asset and will make you feel right at home via craft beer and free popcorn. 
  26. Coley & Punch: Coley & Punch shakes up cocktails and whisky concoctions from its swanky Princes Wharf hub. 
  27. Caretaker: This hidden gem is a New York-style cocktail bar, bringing you the funkiest and yummiest drinks around. With a whole lotta character to the joint, there’s no way you can’t have a good time.
  28. Lovebucket: It’s fair to say Lovebucket is the coolest kid on the block. Fruity cocktails, delicious tapas and some kick-ass staff, what’s not to love?
  29. Gypsy Tearoom: After a hard day of work and play, the Gypsy Tearoom is the perfect place to wind down and get groovy. Renowned for their distressed interior and yummy selection of drinks, you’d be silly to not pay a visit.
  30. Vikki Lane Bar & Kitchen: Tucked away in an open laneway, Vikki Lane is a classic meeting point for all things delicious and fun. There’s frosé, snacks and mouth-watering meals on offer to fill all your groovy needs.
  31. Dr Rudi’s Rooftop Brewing Co:  Located three levels up and looking over Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour, Dr Rudi’s provides quality banter, great vibes AND a bowling ally. This is not a drill—get your butt down there for a wicked time.
  32. The Merchant: For all our Shore pals out there, this one’s for you. Tucked away in the heart of Albany, The Merchant pride themselves on great beer, delicious food and a bloody good time. Check out what live music bands are on—you may even get the chance to show off your slick dance moves.
  33. Ponsonby Social Club: A total veteran when it comes being one of Auckland’s best bars to hit up for a good time—the Ponsonby Social Club totally holds it down.
  34. The Matakana: On a pretty summer’s day, you wanna be heading up north to The Matakana for a glass of locally produced wine and oysters in their beer garden.
  35. Rickshaw Eddy’s Bar: This snazzy spot sits across the along the beach of Mission Bay. Despite the dazzling location, Rickshaw Eddy’s rocks a humble, old-school vibe which is totally unique and cool. Get amongst!
  36. The Commons: A real crowd favourite for the North Shore locals, The Commons are known for their gorgeous floral jugs and out-door setting. Oh-so divine.
  37. The Conservatory: Sitting along Auckland’s Viaduct, you really do have the best seat in the house. Decorated with a whole lotta plants, you can enjoy a glass of anything and everything in a funky hanging chair, if you’re into that.

  42. Montage: Sip on your fave cocktail in style at Point Chev’s Montage. Set in the foyer of an Art Deco cinema, this little gem of a bar just oozes vintage vibes. It’s utterly fabulous, darling.
  43. Vodka Room: This Ponsonby joint is home to a massive range of —you guessed it—vodkas, that can be summoned from your very own “press for vodka” button. There’s also karaoke and Russian inspired food—what more could you ask for?!
  44. Mr Toms: Celebrate the end of the week with a cheeky cocktail or two at Ponsonby’s Mr Toms. If you get peckish while knocking back a Tiki Mule then don’t hold back from ordering any one of their scrumptious pizzas.
  45. Mo’s: One of the friendliest bars in Auckland as well as one of the best bars in Auckland, this teeny tiny cocktail joint has a huuuuge place in our hearts. You’ll even find a Hershey’s-infused chocolatini here!
  46. Annabel's: With a wine list that changes from season to season, there’s really no excuse to make Annabel’s your local watering hole. Here you can indulge in the finest drops of pinot and tapas to match.
  47. 69: If you’re all about chill vibes and good times, look no further than 69 on K’ Road. Serving epic drinks and tasty treats to boot, the cocktail lounge boasts stunning views of the city’s skyline.
