Gone are the days of being a white or red wine-drinker…it’s all about blue (yes, BLUE) wine!

“Blue wine?” we hear you ask. Si, the Italians are at it again and this time they’ve created Saraceni Blumond—the first blue wine in the world!

Contrary to popular belief, the prosecco is neither made by Smurfs (we wish) nor blue grapes. The vino—in fact—gets its vibrant blue colour from a pigment found in grape skin. A touch of dye to boost the hue is added for good measure and voilà, you’ve got blue wine!

Blumond also adds a hint of fresh peach, creating a velvety sparkling wine with a fruity kick. It’s the perfect vino to pop for celebrations or to add to cocktails. It’s also the official wine of The Blues rugby team—how very, very appropriate.

Auckland couple, Dan and Elle Wuthrich, discovered the unique wine at an Italian banquet in Tuscany (ooh la la!). Seriously impressed by the vibrant wine, they decided to bring it to New Zealand (not all superheroes wear capes). Wuthrich Wines was born and now you can sip on the blue bubbles yourself.

But if blue’s not your colour, fear not! Blumond has a Merlot sister: Saraceni Splendia Fragolino. Boasting a hint of strawberry, the sparkling wine is crimson-coloured—somewhere between a traditional red and rosé. This delightful number is light and oh-so delicate.

Both wines are harvested in boxes before being soft pressed. The grapes are then fermented for 20 days before a secondary fermentation in a pressure tank (aka Charmat method). A touch of natural flavours are added (peach and strawberry), creating the uniquely fruity wine.  

Blumond and Splendia are best paired with rich fish, shellfish and cheese. Our advice? Served chilled, enjoy with a platter and you’re away laughing! Both bubbles also pair well with dessert. Cake, pie or sundae, Saraceni is your go-to.
