There are a handful of eateries in Auckland that seem to be absolutely #killingit. With a name like Cereal Killa, it’s no surprise that this Mt Eden café is one of them. Yep, these are the guys responsible for those epic #killashakes you’ve seen all over Instagram but, as we discovered on a recent trip there, Cereal Killa is much, much more than freakshakes.

Natasha and I were invited to check out what Cereal Killa is all about. On arrival, we were happy to see that the Dominion Road café was a total suntrap. Despite not being a huge space, it was roomy and inviting (although we’ve been told things get quite hectic come the weekend).

Colin, one of the owners, just so happens to be a vegan AND a nutritionist. He doesn’t seem to fit the bill of someone who would dish out sugar-laden shakes and Nutella, PB and banana bagels, but he does and he does it well.

While we were tempted to order everything naughty from the menu—candyfloss-topped waffles, all five shakes and the pork belly bun—we stayed sensible (kinda) and opted for the following: a caramel waffle shake, a chocolate Nutella shake, a pork belly bun, the bagel mentioned above and the ‘nutrition bomb’ salad because, y’know, balance.

Both shakes were “Insta-worthy but not intimidating.” They made for a great snap, tasted delicious and didn’t take away from the food. We’re suckers for pork belly and the bun did not disappoint. A soft hunk of pork belly was sandwiched between a fresh brioche bun with sriracha mayo, rocket and a fried egg. As for the bagel…let’s just say it was 158 per cent worth the calories.

What’s even cooler, Cereal Killa run Shake Nights every so often, where you can enjoy an evening treat, a hot dog and listen to some sweet, sweet tunes.

Surprisingly though, our favourite dish was the vegan-friendly nutrition bomb. It was made up of broc, beetroot, avo (yass to hass), heirloom tomato and leafy greens with a kickass vegan basil mayo, which we would—hint, hint—love the recipe for. Other healthy options include an acai bowl, paleo granola, smashed avocado and Moroccan-style mince, all of which we’ll definitely be back to try.

With the ability to make 150 shakes in one day, a philosophy for having fun and a love for simple yet totally scrumptious food, there’s not much we can fault Cereal Killa on. All you’ve got left to do is swing by and check it out for yourself!
