When it comes to delicious eats, Epsom has got it going on. In this neck of the woods you’ll find KK Malaysian, One Tree Grill, Little Jimmy and Me Ne Frego—just to name a few. However, until recently, Epsom was missing a decent burger joint. Introducing the new kid on the block: Corner Burger.

Perched on the corner of Pah Road and Orakau Avenue, Corner Burger entered the Auckland food scene relatively unnoticed. With no social media presence, the eatery wants to make a name for itself based on the quality of its food. Their aim? To serve Auckland’s tastiest burgers.

The burger joint isn’t much to look at. Their interior design is lacking and their magazines date back to 2014. But don’t let this put you off, today we’re talking burgers and that’s something Corner Burger has down pat.

When I recently visited for Friday takeaways, I was treated to a menu starring eight burgers all priced at 12 bux. The menu covers all the bases with everything from sticky pulled pork and fried chicken to beef brisket and a vege-friendly Portobello mushroom burger.

I opted for their Mexican beef offering while my partner went for the corner classic—their take on a cheeseburger. My burger starred a handmade prime beef patty flavoured with Mexican spices, lashing of guacamole, lettuce, corn salsa (great addition), ketchup, and chipotle aioli. Served in a pillowy toasted brioche bun, my burger was full of flavour and damn tasty.

As someone who likes their steak cooked rare, I was pleased to see my beef patty was slightly pink—the meat was juicy, just how I like it. However, if that’s not your thing, the friendly folk are only too happy to cook your burger ‘well done’.

No visit to Corner Burger is complete without a serve of their hand-cut Agria fries. These fries are in the running as the best fries in Auckland. They prepare them daily using a hand press with a half-inch cut so they’re fresh, chunky, and super duper crispy. Pro tip: share a serve between two because the serving size is huuuge.

The best way to wash down a burger is with a thick and creamy shake no one knows this better than Corner Burger. Their shakes are made using Kohu Road ice-cream (the tits) and come in all your favourite flavours: dark choc, salted caramel, raspberry, and vanilla. If you’re a dairy-free kiddo, the coconut and mango offering can be made with coconut milk.

It’s fair to say this isn’t any old takeaway. They’re all about quality ingredients and fresh produce. They make a point of hand-making their ingredients—their relish, aioli, salsa and pickles are all made from scratch—and they believe in the value of long and slow cooking. Their brisket and pulled pork are slow-cooked for more than 14 hours and their chicken is marinated for 24 hours before being twice-fried in their gluten-free crumb (I can vouch for the chicken—I devoured a fried chicken burger on my second visit). They use sauces from the award-winning Culley’s range, you can opt for a Phoenix gluten-free bun and their house-made sodas use ingredients from Six Barrel Soda.

Corner Burger, you’re on to a good thing. Thanks for gracing Epsom with your presence and giving us locals a decent burger fix. Right on!
