Ask an Auckland foodie where’s good to go to dinner and the answer will invariably involve much enthusiastic spluttering about Depot, one of the best restaurants in Auckland for good times and great nosh.
Located in the heart of Auckland’s CBD, in the shadow of the Sky Tower, Depot is a cosy Auckland restaurant with serious food chops and a cracking wine list, manned by award winning New Zealand chef, Al Brown.
Freshly shucked oysters are the stars of the show here. Order up and be glad you did. Bloody Mary oyster shooters are also on hand for your booze loving/oyster squeamish pals.
The menu is made up of small and large share plates, most of which are deliciously meaty, and the ideal companions to the many drinks you’ll be downing.
Favourites included the skirt steak with tobacco onions served with habanero mustard on iceberg lettuce (because iceberg lettuce is cool again, don’t you know?), and the delightfully light kingfish sashimi with oyster cream.
If you can resist the temptation to over order on the mains, Depot has the kind of sides menu that’s liable to make you clutch your dining partner like a mad person and ask if you can pretty please order them all. Think duck fat yams with sumac, mint, chilli, and orange, and potato skins with pecorino and porcini salt. YAS.
Our charismatic and not bad-looking sommelier talked us into some fantastic wines, so if in doubt don’t be shy about asking for a hand when ordering—these guys know their stuff!
Depot doesn’t take bookings so get in early if you want to secure a stool at one of the best restaurants in Auckland.
Not a night owl? Depot is also open for breakfast, dishing up beignets and bacon and egg doonas to get your day started right.
