Auckland’s Sky Tower will be lit to imitate a morning sunrise to welcome in the Maori New Year. In collaboration with the Matariki Festival, Te Korakora is coming to Federal Street, bringing you a taste of Te Ao Māori for the Maori New Year. This Thursday, where else would you be other than SkyCity to celebrate this starry festival?
Federal Street will be filled with lights and Maori culture. Matariki translates from Te Reo Maori is ‘Eyes of God’ or ‘Little eyes’
However, with the food available your eyes may be bigger than your stomach in this case! Top chefs Cameron Petley and Paul Barrett will be creating Maori-influenced dishes sure to satisfy those taste buds.
Watch as Federal Street transforms into a lively celebration of contemporary Maori culture, food and festivities with live performers and dancers throughout the night. L.A.B (Laughton and Brad Kora) Tawaroa Kawana and MAI FM DJ09 will be delivering the beats. Also performing is Hawaiian performers Halau Hula o Moana Nui a Kiwa and the Poi boys.
If you’re game enough, there’s also glow-in-the dark moko face painting and a LED poi performance. This is your chance to embrace the Matariki Festival in full force!
