Eat Your Way To Beautiful Skin

The adage ‘you are what you eat’ is really—really—relevant when it comes to great skin. Pampering yourself with that six-step beauty regime may be beneficial for your skin but what you put into your mouth has a seriously significant impact on your skin’s barrier. And, thanks to grandma for the ol’ tip, we’re heading to the supermarket ASAP! Grab a pen and paper and jot down these ten food hacks for glowing, wrinkle-free skin.

#1 Turmeric

You may have rolled your eyes at your bestie ordering that turmeric latte, but it turns out she’s one-step ahead in the beauty game. Not only is it great for the immune system, turmeric has proven to be one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory and free radical fighting options for your skin. A study in Oncogene shows turmeric contains the antioxidant curcumin that actively protects the skin’s barrier. If the taste doesn’t quite agree with you, this miracle product also works its magic when applied topically. Try mixing it with a little lemon juice and coconut oil for a face mask and watch that sun damage fade and those skin blemishes lighten.

#2  Salmon

Those on the Mediterranean diet swear by this oily fish as it is well-known for its high levels of anti-inflammatory omega 3s—now we understand why Italians are so often glowing in personality and appearance. Salmon contains dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE), a chemical that actively looks after your cells’ membranes—AKA, working to prevent ageing. It’s also filled with B vitamins that help your muscles function and your skin looking toned. Adios, saggy skin!

#3 Eggs

Yolks get a bad rep. Too often we see egg-white omelettes grazing the menu of our favourite cafes. Although great for getting your post-workout protein, you are ignoring your skins needs when you do so. An egg’s yolk contains a much-loved beauty vitamin called biotic. This B vitamin promotes healthy skin, hair and nails while adding moisture back into the skin—welcoming that radiant appearance. So don’t skimp on the yolk friends: the eggier the better!

#4  Brazil Nuts

Fun fact: Just ONE brazil nut has more than 135% of your daily intake of selenium, the nutrient that boosts the production of collagen. From our early 20’s our bodies start drastically losing collagen, which means it’s up to us to ensure we’re feeding it back in. Without collagen, our skin appears tired, dry and ultimately, wrinkly… Enough said, it’s time to buy some Brazil nuts. What’s better, this superfood is particularly beneficial for restoring the collagen beneath the eyes, diminishing the appearance of dark circles.

#5 Avocado

It’s all about those healthy fats, says every food blogger, ever. Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids which keep the skin hydrated and looking its best. There’s never been a better reason to splurge on a few avos. Avocados also protect our skin from premature ageing caused by ultraviolet radiation, creating a stronger, glowing complexion.

#6 Tomatoes

And what goes perfectly with avocado? Tomato. Luckily, this taste-bud loving combination is incredibly beneficial for your skin. Tomatoes’ main bonus is their ability to help clear acne. Alan Logan, the author of The Clear Skin Diet recommends including tomato-based foods in your diet 3-5 times a week. Whether it’s soup in winter, or a fresh salad in the summertime, you will be getting the nutrients from the tomatoes lycopene which lowers the hormones said to create acne. You can even juice them if that’s ya thing!

#7 Papaya

This delicious little tropical fruit is loaded with active enzymes. Beautiful in appearance, it’s no wonder it promotes beautiful skin, too. Papaya contains an enzyme called Papain which relieves inflammation and when applied topically, helps unclog pores and works as a great DIY facial cleanser. Who would have guessed? But don’t forget to eat it too! Just one cup of papaya contains 144 percent of your daily dose of Vitamin C. For those who don’t know, Vitamin C provides that much-needed collagen, meaning immunity and radiant skin go hand in hand.

#8 Dark Chocolate

No complaints from our end—any excuse to eat more chocolate, right? According to a study from the Journal of Nutrition, women who ate more dark chocolate rich in natural cacao had better skin texture and a stronger resistance to UV rays. So now researchers are saying ditch the chemically laden sunscreen and perhaps throw in a few blocks of chocolate to accompany your day at the beach! Just be sure to avoid the tragedy and eat it before it melts.

#9  Blueberries

Your gut will love you for consuming a punnet (or three) of these delicious berries. Blueberries are one of the most antioxidant rich foods due to a compound called anthocyanins. This works to shield the skin from harmful free radicals which try to deplete the collagen that keeps our skin looking its best. Grab a frozen berry mix with blackberries and raspberries too for the ultimate skin loving combo. Throw a few scoops in ya morning smoothie and watch your skin transform.

#10 Yellow Capsicum

This one oddly surprised us—in a good way. A food many of us naturally consume in our summer dishes due to the fresh crunch it provides, is actually incredible for promoting healthy skin. A study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that volunteers who consumed 4 milligrams of vitamin C daily (what you’d get in just one bite of yellow capsicum) decreased the appearance of wrinkles by 11 percent (!!!). This kitchen staple just got a whole lot more exciting, we’re going to be eating capsicum anything and everything from now on.
