We’ve Found New Zealand’s Most Expensive Tongue

By Natasha Van Der Laan - 25 May 2016

When it comes to insurance, it’s easy to get stuck on the boring stuff: cars, homes, health…but that’s not the case for everyone.

When it comes to insurance, it’s easy to get stuck on the boring stuff: cars, homes, health…but that’s not the case for everyone.

Certain celebs rely on their signature…assets…to keep the dollars rolling in. J.Lo insured her butt, Julia Roberts insured her smile and David Beckham insured his legs. We get it, their careers are on the line if shit goes wrong, and if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us Kiwis too!

It turns out we (okay, SOME of us) have pretty valuable body parts too. A New Zealand wine critic has insured her taste buds for a cool $1 million. Yup, Yvonne Lorkin’s nose, palate and throat is worth $1 million—madness!

Why oh why would she do such a thing? Well, Yvonne’s taste buds are pretty snazzy. She’s regarded as a ‘super taster’ because she’s among the top 10 to 25 per cent of people with hypersensitive taste. Imagine how good chocolate must taste to her!

She’s one of the country’s top wine critics, a respected vino comp judge annnd the chief tasting officer (now THAT’S a title we wish we had) for wine subscription service WineFriend. Superb smelling and tasting skills are essential for Yvonne to ace all of these roles.

Should Yvonne suffer any injury or illness that prevents her from doing the work she’s trained for, she’ll be paid out big bucks. Sounds like a pretty sweet gig to us. Where do we sign up?
