Paying homage to its industrial surroundings in Ellerslie is new opening, Marua Road Cafe. Its exterior is reminiscent of a large shipping container, and inside its high stud ceilings gives the dining area and open plan kitchen plenty of natural light, while the concrete walls contrast with the beautiful handmade oak counter.
Here, you’ll find the proud owner pumping out the brews behind the coffee machine. Chris Von Batenburg worked in the hospitality industry in his youth, and recently left the rat race (a decent stint in the advertising world) to pursue his dream of becoming a cafe owner. And we’re rejoicing at his decision.
The menu is made up of brunch-centric favourites. To start the day off right, house-toasted granola would be a good choice. Crunchy and full of goodness, this bowl is naturally sweetened with dates, and accompanied with creamy yoghurt and poached seasonal fruit. Their acai bowl is made from the real deal—not powder like many other cafes use. They have four (yes four) choices of eggs bene. Our pick? The southern fried chicken.
Corn fritters are always a winner, and here they’re light and fluffy, served with streaky bacon, grilled tomato, peppery rocket and a generous dollop of sour cream. There’s a couple of decent sandwiches such as the roast chicken with slaw and pan gravy. Or, opt for a beautiful steak sandwich that’s complete with the perfect addition of fries and aioli.
With a good selection of cabinet food, teas and top notch coffee, there’s no doubt the residents of Ellerslie are ecstatic about their new local. And for those that are wanting to visit, don’t let their industrial location make you think they’ll only be open during the week—Chris and his friendly team will be serving you their delicious offerings seven days a week. You’re welcome.
