Auckland, we used to have a bone to pick with you. You nailed Asian Fusion, brought us the best of Mexican cuisine, and even cranked out some pretty stellar Italian restaurants. But when it came to great American food, we were left in the lurch.

Thankfully, last year, this very serious culinary issue was resolved. Ponsonby restaurant, Miss Moonshine’s slid open its doors, and began catering to all our meat-loving needs. Located down the alley next to Ponsonby’s Golden Dawn, opposite The Street Food Collective, Miss Moonshine’s is Auckland’s answer to American barbeque, and we’re into it.

They’re all about ‘low n’ slow’ method here, with wood smoking, moonshine (obvs), and American favourites with a bit of a Kiwi spin. We’re talking beef brisket, delicate hunks of buttery cornbread, and freshly shucked Bluff oysters, with cocktail or two (we loved the Beach Bunny) to wash the meaty feast down.

If you’re after authentic American nosh this Ponsonby restaurant is the real deal; thanks to the wood-smoker sitting at the back of the restaurant, things can get a bit smoky up at Miss Moonshine’s! Feel free to go up and take a nosy as you watch the smoker transform slabs of New Zealand grown meat into morsels of melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. We also recommend you get amongst the buttermilk fried chicken followed by the delicious eggplant dish because, y’know, balance.

The vibe is something special, too. Mood lighting, a mash up of Tame Impala/Neil Young beats, and possibly the nicest Ponsonby wait staff you’ll ever come across (Ryan, the tall guy with the epic moustache and his wife, Annelise are the owners—say hi) make for a special dining experience.

It may not be one for your vegan pals, but Miss Moonshine's is just the meaty temple Auckland was looking for. Gather up your fellow carnivores, and get into this Ponsonby restaurant to see what all the fuss is about. Oh, and don’t forget the Orleans’s salted caramel donuts—the perfect finish to an American-inspired, Kiwi-executed feed.
