Auckland’s latest new opening is a blast from the past. Both an eatery and social club, Arcade is Kingsland’s bold and brilliant new addition to the foodie scene.
Breathing new life into the former Chicka space, the fit out is a celebration of pop culture with the walls decked out with sprawling murals, neon hues and even old-school arcade games. From the 80s hip-hop vibes at the entrance, to the Japanese anime-inspired mural, you can tell Arcade is a real passion project for the owner, Paul Anakakul, from the moment you arrive.
“It’s relaxed, fun, and approachable,” says Paul. “We’re delivering restaurant quality food and drinks in a casual space with a focus on fun. I like to think of Arcade as just a really cool spot to hang out.”
Set to be a local social hub, no two visits to Arcade will be the same. With events and celebrations on almost every night of the week including live DJs, student nights and even a pop-up store or two, you'll be back again and again.
As stunning as their surroundings, the food tastes as good it looks. Drawing inspiration from flavours across Asia, chef Mr Aito and Paul have worked tirelessly to create a high-quality menu of sharing platters, tacos, burgers, salads and even sushi.
Our top pick is the sizzling steak teppanyaki. This premium eye fillet is served on a bed of bean sprouts marinated in their signature sauce and spices—we’ll forgive you for not sharing.
In a testament to the building’s former resident, Chicka lives on through Arcade’s legendary fried chicken. Smothered in either a tangy Asian BBQ or Thai inspired ‘wow wow’ sauce, (you’ll want to get a serve of each), these are some of the most succulent chicken wings and thighs around, served piping hot and in all their golden and crunchy glory. Pro tip: pair with a side of corn cheesy for a life changing combination. On the menu for a limited time, the corn cheesy is a literal hot plate of goodness packed with corn, edamame bean, cheese, red onion, carrot and parsley. The key is to not dip, but rather wrap the stringy creation around your fried chicken. You can thank us later.
Sushi fiends across Auckland, you’ve found your new obsession—Mr Eito’s roll. Boasting nine super-sized pieces of sushi, there’s a whole range to devour from salmon with tuna (our personal favourite), to tempura prawn, and salmon nigiri. You can even go low carb and opt for their range of fresh sashimi, just make sure you match it with a cocktail creation or liquor-laden milkshake because balance is important.
Finally, you’ll want to round out your feast by pairing their range of Brothers Beer with some totally addictive ribs. Served with salad, kimchi and drowned in drool-worthy Asian BBQ sauce, dig in and get a little messy, they’re worth it.
Officially opening tomorrow, whether you’re up for button smashing your way through space invaders, catching-up over a cold one, or looking to chow down on some ribs, Arcade is your new one-stop-spot for an epic night out.
